Full job description

Junior Editor

Is this you?

We're an independent children's publisher based in Truro, Cornwall, creating imaginative, funny and visually engaging books for children aged 3–12.

We're a small creative team with big ambitions, and we're looking for a Junior Editor who can help us develop new books from the first spark of an idea through to publication.

This role isn't for someone who wants to spend all day correcting commas (although you'll do some of that too).

It's for someone who can spot a great idea, think visually, organise multiple projects, and understand what makes children laugh.

You might be the person we're looking for if you:

  • Still laugh at a well-timed fart joke
  • Think children's books are every bit as creative and exciting as books for adults
  • Love cartoons, comics, graphic novels, games and illustrated books
  • Have a strong grasp of written English and enjoy playing with words
  • Have a good visual eye and can recognise great design and illustration
  • Are organised, detail-oriented and able to juggle several projects at once
  • Enjoy coming up with ideas and thinking outside the box
  • Live in Cornwall

What you'll be doing

Working closely with our creative team, you'll help shape and develop new titles from concept to publication.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Generating and developing new book concepts
  • Creating storyboards and planning book structures
  • Writing and editing content for selected projects
  • Proofreading and quality checking manuscripts
  • Managing projects through the publishing process
  • Liaising with authors, illustrators and other contributors
  • Supporting the wider team with editorial and promotional activities

What we're looking for

We're less interested in whether you've followed a traditional publishing path and more interested in your creativity, enthusiasm and ability to make things happen.

If you're equally comfortable discussing story ideas, spotting a typo, organising a schedule and debating whether a burping unicorn is funnier than a sneezing dinosaur, we'd love to hear from you.

To apply

Please send your CV together with a short covering letter telling us:

  • Your favourite children's book, comic or graphic novel.
  • The funniest thing you've ever seen in a children's book.
  • A one-sentence idea for a children's book that would make a seven-year-old want to read it.

Job Details

  • Full-time

Benefits:

  • Casual dress
