Hire Desk Manager – Tool & Construction Equipment Hire (Croydon Depot)

Are you an organised and customer-focused professional looking for your next opportunity within the tool hire industry?

We are looking for a Hire Desk Manager to join our Croydon depot and take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the hire desk, ensuring excellent customer service, smooth operational coordination, and efficient management of hire activity.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone with experience in tool hire, plant hire, construction supply, or logistics who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment and wants to grow within a successful independent business.

About us

The Hireman is a growing, independent tool hire company, supplying professional contractors across London, the Home Counties, and beyond. Founded in 1985, we’ve built an excellent reputation for service, reliability, and going out of our way to help our customers.

We believe we’re successful because we make life easy for our clients – and we give our people the tools, trust, and support to make that happen.

The role

Based at our Croydon depot, the Hire Desk Manager will play a key role in supporting the smooth day-to-day operation of the depot.

Working closely with the Head of Depot Operations and the wider depot team, you will manage hire enquiries, coordinate equipment availability, support customer accounts, and ensure the efficient administration of hires, off-hires, and deliveries.

This is a hands-on and varied role that requires strong communication, organisation, and customer service skills, along with the ability to work effectively under pressure.

Key responsibilities will include;

  • Managing the day-to-day operation of the hire desk
  • Handling customer enquiries, quotations, and hire bookings
  • Coordinating deliveries, collections, and equipment availability
  • Building and maintaining strong customer relationships
  • Ensuring accurate processing of hires, off-hires, invoices, and related administration
  • Supporting depot operations and working closely with drivers, fitters, and the wider depot network
  • Assisting with stock control and fleet utilisation
  • Maintaining high levels of customer service and operational efficiency
  • Supporting compliance with company procedures and operational standards
  • Contributing to process improvements and efficient ways of working

What we’re looking for

  • Proven track record in a depot or branch (tool, plant or access industry, construction supply, or logistics preferred).
  • A solid work history showing commitment, integrity, and progression.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, confident liaising with customers, colleagues, and suppliers.
  • A customer-focused and professional approach
  • Good IT skills and administration skills
  • A positive attitude, problem-solving mindset, and a good sense of humour.
  • The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to support the wider team

What We Offer

  • Excellent salary (negotiable depending on experience).
  • Enhanced contributory Workplace Pension.
  • Health Cash Plan with virtual GP service.
  • 7.30am – 5pm Monday to Friday working hours.
  • 33 days’ holiday (including bank holidays).
  • Free tool hire for personal use and staff discount on purchases.
  • Fresh fruit, snacks, and drinks in our depots.
  • Regular social events and company parties.
  • A Christmas turkey (or alternative seasonal gift).

If you’re ambitious, committed, and ready to take the next step in your career, we want to help you get there.
