Science Dome Presenter
Location: Home-based, travelling to schools and venues
Company: Science Dome
Reports to: Science Dome Manager
Working arrangement: Self-employed / freelance
Typical working hours: School hours, with travel before and after as required
Must be able to drive and have access to your own vehicle.
About Science Dome
Science Dome brings science to life through immersive, interactive experiences delivered inside our mobile planetariums.
We visit primary schools, secondary schools, community groups, events and other venues across the UK, giving children the chance to explore subjects including space, astronomy, dinosaurs, the human body, evolution, geology and much more.
Our presenters are at the heart of what we do. They don’t simply play a pre-recorded show – they engage with pupils, explain science in an accessible and exciting way, answer questions and adapt each session to the age and needs of the audience.
The Role
We are looking for enthusiastic and confident Science Dome Presenters to deliver memorable science experiences in schools and other venues.
This is a varied, independent and hands-on role. You’ll travel from home to your allocated bookings with Science Dome equipment, set up the mobile dome at the venue, deliver a programme of presentations throughout the day, and pack everything away afterwards.
A typical booking may involve presenting several sessions to different year groups, so you’ll need plenty of energy and be comfortable adapting your presentation style for children of different ages and abilities.
You don’t need to be a teacher, but you do need to be someone who can capture a room full of children’s attention and make science exciting.
What You’ll Be Doing
Your responsibilities will include:
- Travelling to schools, nurseries, community groups and other venues for scheduled Science Dome bookings.
- Safely unloading, setting up and inflating the mobile planetarium dome.
- Setting up and testing the projection, sound and associated equipment before sessions begin.
- Liaising professionally with school staff on arrival and confirming the day’s timetable and any specific requirements.
- Delivering engaging, interactive science presentations to groups ranging from nursery-aged children through to secondary pupils and adults.
- Adapting presentations to suit different ages, abilities and educational needs, including pupils with SEND.
- Following the school’s timetable carefully so that sessions begin and finish at the agreed times.
- Encouraging participation and confidently answering questions from pupils and staff.
- Managing transitions between different shows and topics throughout the day.
- Packing down the dome and equipment safely at the end of the booking and loading everything back into the vehicle.
- Leaving the school hall or venue clean and tidy.
- Looking after Science Dome equipment and reporting any faults, damage or maintenance requirements promptly.
- Keeping your knowledge of our presentations and science topics up to date.
- Supporting occasional public events, festivals and outdoor-dome events where required.
What We’re Looking For
The right personality is just as important to us as formal qualifications.
You’ll need:
- A genuine enthusiasm for science, space and learning.
- The confidence to speak and present to groups of children and adults.
- The ability to make information interesting, understandable and fun.
- Excellent presentation, communication and people skills.
- A friendly, professional and approachable manner when dealing with schools and clients.
- Exceptional organisation and timekeeping.
- The confidence to work independently and manage a full booking from arrival through to pack-down.
- The ability to adapt quickly if a school changes its timetable or requirements on the day.
- A practical approach to setting up and handling equipment.
- A willingness to learn new science topics and presentations.
- Flexibility around travel and working hours.
Previous experience in teaching, presenting, science communication, education, museums, STEM outreach or working with young people would be particularly useful, although we are happy to consider applicants from other backgrounds who have the right skills and personality.
Travel
This is a home-based travelling role, rather than a role based at one Science Dome location.
Bookings take place at schools and venues in different locations, so presenters must be comfortable driving regularly and travelling early enough to arrive and set up before the first scheduled session.
Occasional longer-distance bookings may require an overnight stay but these would be discussed with you, prior to booking.
Locations that work well - if you are based in the south west: Yeovil, Bournemouth, Bath, Bristol, Sherborne , Dorchester, Shaftesbury, Taunton, Salisbury, Poole...etc.
Physical Requirements
Please be aware that this is an active role.
Presenters are responsible for transporting, unloading, setting up and packing away the mobile dome and associated equipment. You should therefore be comfortable with regular lifting, moving equipment and being active throughout the working day.
Working Hours
Most bookings take place during the school day.
A typical school booking operates approximately 8am–4pm, although travel time will usually fall outside these hours.
Start and finish times will vary depending on the location of the booking and the school’s timetable.
There may also be opportunities for occasional evening, weekend, holiday or public-event work.
Some team members have work available 5 days a week, some choose to have 1 or two days a week. It is very flexible!
Pay
Science Dome Presenters work on a self-employed/freelance basis. Our team love this as they can work with us alongside other roles.
Presenters receive 40% of the basic booking fee, with agreed travel expenses also provided.
A standard full-day school booking is currently £530, meaning you earn £212 per standard booking, plus mileage on top.
Different booking types may have different fees.
Full details of fees and expenses will be provided before commencing work.
Training
Full training will be provided in:
- Setting up and packing down the mobile Science Dome.
- Operating the projection and presentation equipment.
- Delivering Science Dome’s existing shows and presentations.
- Adapting presentations for different ages and audiences.
- Basic troubleshooting and equipment care.
- Safeguarding and appropriate conduct when working in schools.
As presenters become more experienced, there may also be opportunities to learn additional shows, contribute ideas for new topics and support the development of Science Dome’s educational content.
Safeguarding
Science Dome works extensively with children and young people.
All presenters are expected to maintain high professional standards and follow Science Dome’s safeguarding procedures and the safeguarding requirements of the schools and venues they visit.
The role is subject to appropriate DBS checks and any other safeguarding requirements applicable to the position.
Most Importantly…
We’re looking for people who can walk into a school, build a great rapport with staff and pupils, and turn a day inside the Science Dome into something children will genuinely remember.
If you’re enthusiastic, dependable, comfortable working independently and love the idea of getting children excited about science, we’d love to hear from you.
Pay: From £212.00 per day
Experience:
- Presenting: 2 years (preferred)
Language:
- Fluent English (required)
Work Location: On the road
