Full job description
We are seeking a driven, dynamic Finance Operations Manager to help scale a growing defence AI technology business in central Oxford!
We develop and deliver mission-critical autonomous systems and hardware manufacturing operations, so reliability, commercial judgement, structured problem-solving and adaptability really matter. This role spans finance operations, accounting, bookkeeping, project finance, systems, and operational improvement in a fast-paced, high-assurance environment.
We are looking for 3-4 days per week initially, with potential to increase to full-time as the business grows.
In this role you will work closely with the leadership team, external finance providers, project managers and operational teams, with the opportunity to grow into a future Finance Lead or CFO role and build a finance function, as the company scales. You will be expected to become embedded in the business and bring ownership, structure, clear communication, and practical judgement rather than simply processing transactions. This is particularly suited to someone who thrives in a high-autonomy, dynamic environment and is comfortable adapting and growing with the business.

Lead VAT, annual accounts, R&D tax credit, grant finance, financial controls, PO/AP processes, supplier onboarding, cashflow forecasting, budgeting, capital management and liquidity reporting.
Commercial & Project Finance (Secondary): Maintain project profitability reporting, revenue recognition schedules and contract performance monitoring. Support project costing, pricing, financial modelling, contract and grant compliance, government-funded project reporting, supplier management and procurement activities.
Other: Build a scalable finance function by improving systems, personnel resourcing, integrations, workflows and processes. Provide strategic support through due diligence, financial analysis and business case development.
What we are looking for
- Experience carrying out the primary duties above in a Finance Manager, Financial Controller, Management Accountant or similar role within a growing tech startup, engineering, manufacturing or project-led environment
- ACCA, CIMA, ACA, or equivalent qualification
- Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables and Power Query; comfortable using modern AI tools and interested in applying automation and AI technologies to finance processes
- Experience with QuickBooks preferred, or similar accounting platforms
- Willingness to work primarily from our Oxford office, with flexibility where appropriate
It’s a plus if you also have:
- Experience in hardware, manufacturing, engineering, aerospace, robotics or defence sectors
- Experience with project accounting and grant-funded projects
- Experience supporting R&D tax claims
- ERP implementation experience
- Experience with procurement and supply chain processes
- Experience with Power BI, automation platforms, AI tools or workflow systems
- Experience supporting audits, fundraising or investment activities
By joining us, you'll have:
- The ability to make a measurable difference in the creation of cutting-edge technology in a rapidly growing start-up
- Fast-paced environment with a world-class, positive, talented, and high-achieving team
- Forward-thinking, supportive culture with company retreats and strategic alignment
- World-class growth opportunities and training resources including self-development days An opportunity for drone pilot training
- Merit-based compensation
- 5% employer pension contribution
- 25 days holiday + UK bank holidays
- Medical Insurance
- Relocation Support package
- Team socials
- A variety of perks that are evolving: Free Monday team lunch, Cycle2work scheme, annual subscription allowance
Security clearance:
Due to the sensitive nature of some of our work, it would be beneficial for candidates to be able and willing to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for this role.
Location
This is an office-based role in Oxford. You'll work alongside leading engineers, AI specialists, and industry pioneers, contributing directly to cutting-edge advancements in autonomous technology.
The Archangel Experience
We are makers and engineers first, driven by the desire to solve challenges that matter. Automation is how humanity moves forward and for us it’s more than a method; it is a mindset- central to how we streamline work and deliver cutting edge solutions that make a real difference.
