Job Overview

Haughton Design is a well-established UK-based specialist design and development company, with primary market sectors in pharma drug delivery devices, medical devices, in-vitro diagnostics, and scientific instruments.

To support our ambitious growth plans, we are looking for a technically credible Business Development Manager to help grow HD’s presence in medical devices and IVD, while also supporting opportunities within the pharma and drug delivery sector.

Reporting to the CEO, the role requires a strong understanding of the medical device and diagnostics industries, ideally supported by a background in engineering, technical sales or consultative business development. The successful candidate will be expected to understand client needs, identify relevant opportunities, and help position HD’s technical capabilities in a credible and commercially effective way.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and lead business development and business-winning activities, with a focus on medical devices, IVDs and scientific instruments.
  • Identify, qualify and develop new opportunities with medical device companies, diagnostics businesses, pharma organisations and associated technology partners.
  • Build and maintain relationships with existing customers, prospects and strategic contacts across HD’s target sectors.
  • Generate new leads and valued enquiries, developing them into high-quality requests for proposal and commercially attractive opportunities.
  • Lead sales and enquiry development activities, contribute to sales meetings, and coordinate the quotation and proposal process.
  • Identify relevant conferences, exhibitions, networking events, sector-specific forums and social media platforms that support HD’s growth plan, and lead or contribute to attendance, exhibiting and follow-up activity.
  • Contribute to HD’s outreach, thought leadership and sector-specific content, ensuring marketing and business development activity reflects current needs and future trends in HD’s target sectors.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of customer needs in areas such as device development, medical technologies, diagnostics, drug delivery, engineering analysis and design for manufacture.
  • Work closely with directors and technical teams to ensure proposals are technically credible, commercially clear and aligned with customer needs and end-user requirements.
  • Help develop and refine HD’s service offering to ensure it remains relevant to target sectors.
  • Work collaboratively with business development colleagues, directors, technical teams and external partners to optimise outreach, prospecting and business-winning activity.
  • Manage CRM-related activities, prospect tracking and business development records.

Key Experience

  • Confident and effective communicator with the ability to engage credibly with technical, commercial and senior stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of the medical device industry, ideally including exposure to product development, design controls, commercialisation, regulatory expectations and technical consultancy services.
  • Experience in technical sales, consultative business development, account development or commercial relationship management within a relevant technical, engineering, medical, diagnostics or life sciences sector.
  • A background in medical device engineering, IVD development, diagnostics, drug delivery, life sciences, technical consultancy or engineering services would be highly beneficial.
  • Ability to understand technically complex services and translate them into clear, client-relevant value propositions.
  • Ability to build awareness of market needs, competitor activity and future sector trends, and use this insight to shape outreach, content and business development activities.
  • Ability to make a meaningful contribution to winning new opportunities by understanding HD’s target sectors, technology trends, technical capabilities and client decision-making processes.

Benefits

  • Hybrid working – 3 days in the office (flexible for the right candidate)
  • Enhanced parental leave
  • Enhanced sick pay
  • Salary sacrifice pension scheme – enhanced employer contributions
  • Holiday purchase scheme
  • 30 days annual leave, increasing by 1 day every 2 years up to a maximum of 33 days
  • Profit-based bonus scheme
