Full job description

Overview:

We offer short work experience placements with Autocar, What Car? and Classic & Sports Car. These placements are designed to help you learn about the industry and give you the opportunity to develop your journalism and that can help you understand the industry, and give you the opportunity to show us what you’re capable of. Many of our staff started their careers with us in this way.

Due to high demand, we can’t accept everyone, so please read the details carefully before applying. Placements usually run for one working week (Monday to Friday). Most placements can be completed online, so you can take part from anywhere. However, if travel is available to our head offices in Twickenham, there may be a chance to work in the office. Our teams work 3 days in the office and 2 days at home.

What will you need to complete Work Experience?

We would need you to have access to a computer, access to a quiet space if completing virtually, and a stable internet connection. We would also need you to have a Google Account (for using google tools e.g., Google Meet), access to Microsoft Word and Adobe Photoshop (full version). If you don’t have it, install the free 7-day trial the day before your placement.

If you don’t have all of the above, please advise this in your application.

What will your experience include?
Throughout your experience, you will be working on various aspects of feature story production and other tasks that may arise for Autocar, What Car? and Classic & Sports Car. You will usually be given an opportunity to produce some written work, on which we will provide feedback.

The placement is designed to show us what you are capable of, and for you to make a meaningful contribution to our titles during your time. We would like to give you tangible experience of automotive journalism.

How can I apply?

Please collate the following (in one document) and submit your application via our careers portal.

  • A short description of why you are interested in this automotive journalism work experience (50-100 words, if you love cars please tell us why!)

  • A copy of your CV

  • An example of your writing of up to 500 words that could be published by one of our brands (Autocar, What Car? or Classic & Sports Car). Please see a suggested title below. We want to see your opinions, originally presented in your own words. Please note we have AI detection tools and will not accept applicants who have generated answers.

“Do you think the UK government’s aim of banning all non-electric powered new cars from sale by 2035 is realistic?”

Good luck with your application. If you have any questions or require reasonable adjustments, please reach out to recruitment@haymarket.com.
