Full job description

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is an Executive Agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and is responsible for ensuring the safety, quality, and efficacy of veterinary medicines in the UK.

We have two vacancies for Veterinary Pharmacovigilance Inspectors.

The Pharmacovigilance Inspector ensures that Marketing Authorisation Holders (MAHs) comply with their legal obligations for pharmacovigilance in accordance with Veterinary Medicines Regulations 2013 (as amended) (VMR) and EU 2019/6. This role is critical to safeguarding animal and public health, and the environment through rigorous inspection, compliance oversight, and stakeholder engagement.

The role leads a discrete, high-impact operational area and operates within a complex scientific and regulatory framework, requiring expert judgement, leadership of inspection activities, and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams (internal VMD teams, external stakeholders and other regulators).

Qualifications
Scientific or Regulatory (Degree or Postgraduate Qualification in related areas)

Licences
Full Driving Licence

Skills and Experience
We’re looking for you to have:

  • Degree in a relevant scientific or regulatory discipline.
  • Proven experience in a pharmacovigilance or regulatory environment (R&D / regulation of medicinal products) conducting regulatory inspections or industry audits.
  • Strong knowledge of GB and EU pharmacovigilance or regulation of medicinal products legislation and guidance.
  • Thorough understanding and practical experience of Quality Management Systems, including audit and inspection.
  • Proven ability to analyse complex information and make effective decisions, particularly in a time dependent setting.
  • Experience of conducting compliance and / or enforcement activities in a regulatory setting
  • Leading a team and ensuring they are adaptable to change.
  • Delivering difficult messages with authority and persuasiveness
  • Being confident when challenged over the action you or the team has taken to address a breach of regulations
  • Proven ability to continuously learn and maintain awareness of evolving standards / requirements.

We’re looking for someone that has/is:

  • Ability to prioritise, manage workload, and adapt to emerging issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with experience in report-writing.
  • Familiarity with digital technologies and innovation, including AI.
  • Competent user of Microsoft packages, bespoke systems and databases.
