Full job description

Do you see a good story everywhere?

A child dragging a log three times their size?

A muddy instructor emerging from the woods looking like they've been through a minor survival situation?

Or a P3 announcing that this is “the best day of my whole life”?

We need someone who sees those moments and thinks:

“Right. Where's my camera?”

At Kids Gone Wild, brilliant things happen every day. Our instructors are fantastic at creating them. They're just not always quite as good at telling the world about them.

That's where you come in.

About Kids Gone Wild

Kids Gone Wild is a family-run, multi-award-winning outdoor learning and therapeutic education organisation, established in 2018 and based in West Lothian.

We've grown into one of the leading outdoor learning providers in the area, working with schools, families, charities and community groups to give children opportunities to build confidence, resilience, independence and teamwork through real experiences outdoors.

Our office is usually somewhere in the woods. Your office is at home, with a few muddy visits thrown in there!

We're not interested in making childhood look polished, perfect or Instagram beige. We really don't like generic AI images and need someone with bags of personality, humour and great writing capabilities.

We like mud, campfires, big ideas, proper adventures and children discovering they're capable of far more than they thought.

We take what we do seriously.

We just don't take ourselves too seriously while doing it.

And then there's Jax & Scout

Our therapy dog and therapy puppy in training. Jax is our professional morale officer and highly experienced stick retrieval specialist who loves bananas. He also has an apprentice, Scout, who is currently learning the trade and loves a butt scratch.

So, frankly, you've already got two content creators on the payroll.

They're just terrible at using cameras.

The Role

We're looking for a Digital Content & Marketing Assistant to take a hands-on role in how Kids Gone Wild shows up online.

This isn't a role where you'll spend your days creating a 14-page marketing strategy and then handing it to somebody else.

You'll actually make the stuff.

You'll create content, manage our social media channels, run paid advertising, contribute to our website and SEO, write a blog, support email marketing and keep an eye on the numbers to work out what's actually working.

In short:

Create it, share it, measure it, improve it. (Occasionally get mud on it.)

What You'll Be Doing

Your week will involve a mixture of creative, digital and marketing work, including:

  • Creating engaging photo, video and written content for our website, social media and email campaigns
  • Managing and scheduling content across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X
  • Getting out to schools, camps, parties and events to capture the things that are actually happening
  • Creating short-form video content and editing it into something people will actually want to watch
  • Writing blogs, social posts, website copy and email campaigns in the Kids Gone Wild voice
  • Managing Meta advertising campaigns
  • Supporting Google Ads activity
  • Updating website content to maximise SEO
  • Creating and sending email marketing campaigns
  • Monitoring website, social and campaign performance
  • Using data and analytics to understand what's working and what's not
  • Helping develop campaigns that increase awareness, enquiries and bookings
  • Keeping marketing activity organised and making sure things actually get done

Basically, we want someone who can move comfortably between:

“I need to film this hilarious moment of Jax trying to get a massive stick through this door.”

and

“The cost per lead has gone up, here's why, and here's what I'm going to change.”

It's a particular set of skills, we just don't have!

What Does a Normal Week Look Like?

There isn't one.

And that's part of the fun.

It's a new role you will shape, so we have got our heads together to imagine what you might be doing:

9am- Login to the socials with a coffee, see whats occuring, have some online bants replying to comments and keep our followers engaged with a real human. Laugh at other people's generic AI content feeling grateful you don't have to rely on that rotten patter.

10am- Check the instructor diary for next week, see if there is anything content worthy (there will be!) and arrange with them to visit their session to get some photos/ videos

10:30am- Check the analytics from whatever campaign you currently have running, make a plan, press go on the dishwasher

11am- Grab a pan au chocolate and travel mug of coffee and sporting your wellies head over to document the Mini Highland Games session

1pm- Lunch in the woods with the instructor, catch up, discuss Traitors and gather the stories and testimonials from the session

2pm- Head home, write up a blog based on today's findings and get it set up for next weeks email campaign and social media posts

3pm- Send out this weeks email campaign, see how last weeks did, check in on socials again

4pm- Log off. Kick yourself for forgetting to turn on the slow cooker once you got home.

You get the idea... one day you might be sitting at home editing a video, writing a blog and checking Google Analytics, the next you could be in a woodland filming children building shelters while trying not to drop your phone in a puddle.

You might interview one of our instructors.

You might capture a brilliant moment between a child and Jax.

You might spend an afternoon creating an advert campaign.

You might discover that the video you filmed in five minutes has performed ten times better than the beautifully planned one you spent two hours making.

Marketing is like that.

We want someone who enjoys testing and figuring out why.

You'll Probably Be Great At This If...

  • You can spot a good story in the middle of complete chaos.
  • You can pick up a phone, film something and turn it into content people actually want to watch.
  • You understand that good content isn't just pretty, it has a job to do in raising awareness and growing our business
  • You have hands-on experience with social media management
  • You have experience with Meta Ads and Google Ads
  • You can write in a warm, funny and relatable voice without making everything sound like a corporate brochure
  • You understand audiences and know that what works for Instagram isn't necessarily what works for a school decision-maker
  • You can look at data and work out what it's telling you
  • You're organised enough to keep things moving without someone standing over you
  • You're comfortable working independently
  • You're happy getting out from behind the laptop and into the woods when that's where the story is
  • You genuinely care about what we're trying to achieve for children
  • You know what SEO is and, know what to actually do about it

Most importantly, you're someone who gets people.

You understand what makes someone stop scrolling.

What makes them laugh.

What makes them think.

What makes them share something with a friend.

And ultimately, what makes them think:

“We need Kids Gone Wild in our lives.”

This Role Is Probably NOT For You If...

  • You need a perfectly lit studio before you'll press record.
  • Your idea of content creation is putting the logo on a Canva template and calling it Tuesday's post.
  • You think social media strategy means posting the same thing seven times with a different filter.
  • You'd rather write a strategy document than actually make something.
  • Mud, rain and woodland don't sound like particularly appealing working conditions.
  • The thought of filming yourself interviewing someone makes you want to hide behind a tree.
  • You don't like children asking whether you're famous.
  • You don't like children in general.

We're looking for someone who can think creatively, work independently and get stuck in.

Experience & Skills

You don't need to have worked in outdoor education before , we're much more interested in whether you can do the job and have personality behind it.

You'll ideally have experience with:

  • Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and other social platforms
  • Meta Ads
  • Google Ads
  • Google Analytics
  • WordPress
  • SEO
  • Email marketing
  • Short-form video creation and editing
  • Copywriting
  • Basic graphic design
  • Microsoft Office / Excel/ Canva/ Capcut or similar (we are happy to be directed)

We're not particularly interested in how many certificates you have.

Show us what you've actually made.

The Important Bit

This is a part-time, hands-on role within a small family-run business.

You'll have genuine responsibility for our digital presence and plenty of freedom to bring your own ideas to the table.

We don't want someone who needs a brief for every Instagram post.

We want someone who can say:

“I've spotted something. Here's an idea. Let's try it.”

You'll need to be comfortable working independently, managing your own workload and juggling different priorities.

You'll also need to be happy getting out and about across West Lothian to capture content when the good stuff is happening, and it happens A LOT.

Because the best content tends to be where the children are, not sitting on a stock photo website.

Hours & Location

14 hours per week (negotiable)

The role is primarily home-based, with regular visits to schools, camps, birthday parties and events across West Lothian to capture content.

Hours will be worked flexibly by agreement with the Director.

Occasional weekend work may be required when we're running events or activities worth capturing.

Pay £15 per hour

Workplace pension included.

Other Important Bits

  • PVG essential, or willingness to obtain one
  • Driving licence and access to a car would be really helpful (mileage reimbursed)
  • You'll need to be comfortable working outdoors in Scottish weather
  • You need to be comfortable with dogs. and wellies

Before You Apply...

We don't want a generic cover letter telling us that you're a “creative, passionate and motivated individual.” We're sure you are. We want to know WHO you are.

Please apply via Indeed with your CV and include:

1. A link to a piece of social media or digital content you've created that you're genuinely proud of.

2. A short note telling us why you think it worked.

It might have made someone laugh.

It might have generated enquiries.

It might have sold something.

It might simply have made people stop scrolling.

We want to know what you see that other people might miss.

One Last Thing...

We're a small, family-run business.

That means you won't disappear into a marketing department of 47 people where nobody knows what anyone else does. YOU ARE THE MARKETING DEPARTMENT.

You'll have real responsibility, see your ideas go live and see real impact.

We take what we do seriously. We just don't take ourselves too seriously while doing it.

If you have read to the end, congratulations. If this sounds like a bit of you, we would love to hear from you.

Expected hours: No less than 14.0 per week

Benefits:

  • Casual dress
