At The Bay Foodbank, we believe no one should go hungry or face crisis alone. We provide emergency food support, reduce food waste and work with local partners to build a stronger, more resilient community.

We are looking for a motivated and organised Volunteer Coordinator to lead our volunteer programme and support the day-to-day operation of our warehouse.

About the Role

This is a people-focused role at the heart of our organisation. Working alongside the existing team you will recruit, support and coordinate volunteers, ensuring they have a positive and rewarding experience while helping us deliver essential services to our community.

Based primarily at our warehouse in North Shields, you will also help oversee warehouse activities, stock management and safe working practices.

This predominantly a volunteer management and coordination role, with responsibility for overseeing day-to-day warehouse activity and ensuring volunteers can operate effectively and safely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruit, induct, train and support volunteers.
  • Coordinate volunteer rotas and activities.
  • Promote volunteer wellbeing, engagement and retention.
  • Act as the main point of contact for volunteer enquiries and feedback.
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records and documentation.
  • Oversee day-to-day warehouse operations and volunteer activity.
  • Monitor stock levels.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety, food hygiene and safeguarding procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers and community partners.

About You

You will be:

  • An excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Confident coordinating people, volunteers or teams.
  • Organised and able to manage competing priorities.
  • Comfortable using email, spreadsheets and digital systems.
  • Committed to supporting people with dignity and respect.
  • Able to travel between foodbank sites as required.

Essential

  • Experience working with people, volunteers or teams.
  • Strong organisational and relationship-building skills.
  • Awareness of confidentiality and data protection requirements.

Desirable

  • GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent).
  • Experience in the charity, voluntary or community sector.
  • Experience managing volunteers.
  • Knowledge of food hygiene and safe manual handling.
  • Experience using databases or CRM systems.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Why Join Us?

You'll join a dedicated team making a real difference to people across North Tyneside. This is an opportunity to help shape and develop a thriving volunteer community while supporting an organisation committed to compassion, dignity, collaboration and sustainability.

There are regular opportunities for additional paid hours beyond the contracted 16 hours per week, particularly during community events, food collections, seasonal campaigns and periods of increased demand.
