What's A Day like in the life of a Radioactive Waste Specialist?

As part of AWE Waste Services Group, you will manage the review, sentencing, recording and consignment of Radioactive Solid and Non-aqueous Waste on behalf of the company. Key aspects are to liaise with internal and external stakeholders to demonstrate compliance with third party Waste Acceptance Criteria, and to coordinate resources and governance bodies to realise the export of RA Waste whilst ensuring AWE remains within its Permits and Authorisations.

Successful Candidates will be responsible for:

  • Identifying and assessing any assay necessary to be undertaken to support RA waste sentencing.

  • Identifying waste suitability for external consignment via existing routes under an established framework contract.

  • Support the RA Waste Operations Manager in optimising waste management services in line with regulatory and business requirements.

  • Governance of the creation, maintenance and secure storage of lifetime records associated with RA waste.

  • Generating accurate RA waste consignment paperwork and review appropriate approvals from receiving sites prior to exporting RA Waste.

  • Consigning RA waste from the AWE estate in compliance with the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations.

  • Maintaining and promoting high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security, and quality.

Whilst not to be considered a check list, candidates should be able to demonstrate some of the following:

  • Working knowledge of hazardous waste operations.

  • Experience of working with nuclear waste would be beneficial but is not essential.

  • Experience utilising a database to interpret and manipulate information.

  • Experience of collating and presenting information in structured reports.

  • A good understanding of applying rigorous safety and quality cultures to practical demands.

  • An awareness of health and safety, and good working practice.

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for this role.
