Mid-Level Web Developer
About Us
North West News Group is a diverse and growing group of businesses dedicated to serving communities and organisations across media, print, digital, and creative services. The group includes North West News Group, Kaizen Print, Kaizen Studio, and 4SM, each providing specialist expertise within their respective sectors. Together, our businesses deliver trusted local news, high-quality print solutions, creative content production, and innovative marketing services. We are committed to excellence, innovation, and customer service, building strong relationships with the communities and clients we serve while creating opportunities for growth and development across our organisation.
About the Role
We are looking for a technically proficient and solutions-oriented Mid-Level Web Developer to support the development, maintenance and continuous improvement of our digital platforms across the group.
The successful candidate will have strong technical knowledge, a keen eye for design, hands-on experience with WordPress, or other website platforms and a good understanding of how e-commerce websites operate. They will play a key role in developing and optimising websites that enable customers to discover, purchase and access digital news content through websites and apps. Have strong experience in working on projects and bringing them through to completion.
Experience with subscription-based business models, digital content monetisation and online publishing would be a significant advantage.
This role is suited to someone who combines technical development skills with an understanding of the commercial objectives of a digital business, and who can turn business requirements into effective, user-friendly digital experiences.
Role Responsibilities
- Build, develop, maintain and optimise many websites, primarily but not exclusively using WordPress.
- Develop and customise WordPress themes, plugins, templates and functionality to meet business requirements.
- Have a keen eye for design and have experience in bringing projects to their completion.
- Manage website updates, enhancements, bug fixes and ongoing technical improvements.
- Ensure websites are responsive, accessible, secure and optimised for performance across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and work proactively to minimise website downtime and disruption.
- Manage integrations with third-party platforms, APIs and digital services.
- Develop and maintain website functionality that supports online purchasing and digital content sales.
- Understand the end-to-end e-commerce customer journey, including product discovery, registration, checkout, payment processing and post-purchase access.
- Support the implementation and optimisation of payment gateways, customer accounts and purchase workflows.
- Work on solutions that improve conversion rates, reduce friction during checkout and enhance the overall customer experience.
- Ensure that website functionality supports commercial objectives and provides a seamless purchasing experience.
- Support the development and maintenance of subscription-based products and services, including digital news subscriptions and recurring payments.
- Help implement and maintain paywalls, access controls and content entitlement functionality, ensuring that subscribers can access the content they have purchased.
- Understand how website content management systems work with mobile apps and other digital distribution channels.
- Work with editorial, product and digital teams to ensure content is published accurately and consistently across digital platforms.
Skills and Experience Required
- Proven experience as a Web Developer, WordPress Developer, Website Builder or in a similar technical web role.
- Strong practical knowledge of WordPress, including themes, plugins, customisation, content management and troubleshooting.
- Good understanding of e-commerce websites and online purchasing journeys.
- Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP.
- Understanding of APIs and third-party integrations.
- Experience working with payment gateways, online checkout processes and customer account functionality.
- Good understanding of responsive web design, website performance, usability and technical SEO.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and deliver solutions independently.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with non-technical stakeholders and communicate technical concepts clearly.
- A proactive, hands-on approach, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a changing business environment.
