The vacancy

Job purpose

Reporting to the Website Manager, you will provide web and digital technical support to the Communications team in the delivery of our online and digital communications activities. The main focus of the role will be to provide technical expertise in the ongoing development and integration of the website and digital communications channels, in analytics and in SEO. You will also take the lead in producing news and marketing emails each month.

We are a busy team and we are planning a period of development and change for our website; as such this role has scope for development within our expanding team. We offer a friendly and supportive work environment in which new ideas are welcomed.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with the Website Manager to ensure the RCVS website and subsidiary website(s) are fully operational at all times.
  • Liaise with our external website supplier regarding the day-to-day running of the website and current and future development projects.
  • Keep abreast of new web and mobile technologies, recommend best practice, suggest areas for improvement and advise colleagues accordingly.
  • Work with the Communications colleagues and liaise with external agencies to develop and design additional digital communications tools.
  • Help develop our website search facilities and ensure they provide an excellent user experience.
  • Monitor and analyse our website usage data, provide regular reports and recommend changes/improvements based on those data.
  • Evaluate our website, and in particular its online search tools, for SEO and suggest appropriate changes and improvements.
  • Work with the Website Manage to ensure the website and other digital channels are compliant with relevant laws and regulations, such as accessibility, privacy, data protection and data security, cookies etc, and that appropriate licences, contracts and registrations are up to date (in consultation with the IT Dept).
  • Carry out usability testing on the website and other digital channels.
  • Edit internally produced videos and help build an archive of web-tutorial videos.
  • Support the work of the Web Coordinator team and help train Web Coordinators.
  • Production and design of e-newsletters to ensure accessibility across devices and platforms and help drive user engagement.
  • Support other areas of work in the Communications Department, as and when required.

Other responsibilities

  • With your line manager, identify training needs to ensure your skills and knowledge are relevant and up to date.
  • Contribute as required to the departmental Risk Register and Data Retention Policy.
  • Carry out any other relevant tasks as may be reasonably requested by the Director of Communications.

Essential criteria


  • Educated to degree level, or with a Certificate/Diploma in a relevant subject, eg project management, website design and build.

Required skills, knowledge and experience

  • Demonstrable knowledge of HTML, CSS and responsive design.
  • Working knowledge of JavaScript, iQuery and PHP.
  • Good UX and UI design knowledge and skills.
  • Proven track record in working effectively with third party web/digital design agencies.
  • Experience of CMS systems, particularly WordPress.
  • Experience of using Google Analytics.
  • HTML email design skills and best practices
  • Good time and project management skills.
  • Great communication skills – written and verbal.

Desired skills, knowledge and experience

  • A portfolio of web/digital/mobile communications projects.
  • Knowledge and skills using Adobe Creative Suite applications especially Photoshop.
  • Video editing skills and knowledge of appropriate video-editing software, in particular Adobe Premier Pro.
  • Knowledge of web hosting plans and control panel software.
  • Familiarity with the latest accessibility regulations and W3C standards.
  • Experience in cross platform and cross browser testing.
