Full job description

Senior Lead Application Developer

Flexible-Hybrid Working (Newbridge, Edinburgh,EH28 8SZ)

This role requires a minimum number of days on site and is not a remote based role, only apply if you are able to meet this commitment.

  • Experienced hands-on Senior Application Developer skilled in C#, .Net, Mobile, Web and Desktop Development.
  • Track record in managing a team of Software Engineers and setting standards and processes based on both Waterfall and Agile delivery frameworks including management & configuration of Azure DevOps across the full software development lifecycle (SDLC).

The Role

Are you an experienced developer with a track record in in delivering solutions utilising C#, .Net & Mobile? Not only are we looking for these core skills and someone with full-stack experience, but also in the search for an individual who has previously been regarded as the leader in the team in setting standards, maturing processes and governance around the SDLC, mentoring others and driving innovation through thought leadership. This is a hands-on role (100% managers need not apply!) with an estimate of 10-15% leadership effort and the remaining application development. We have a large number of applications and technical debt requiring management as well as a need to look to the future with regards traditional application development vs Cloud Applications based on services from Azure etc.

This role offers flexible working but due to the seniority and need to engage with the rest of the IT team will demand a minimum set number of days in the office per week (likely to be more to begin with as you ease into the role and learn about the business).

We are a traditional business and global leader in our field that continues to expand with the likelihood that the IT function will follow suit to support that growth. Those looking for a google’esque or tech-start-up working environment may need to look elsewhere but what we lack in bean bags and break out rooms we can make up for in opportunities for career development, job satisfaction, autonomy to drive innovation, a highly supportive team around you and potential for International Travel.

Summary of responsibilities

  • Development activity to deliver applications across the various business areas.
  • Set standards, guidelines and peer code reviews to ensure high quality and standardisation across the team.
  • Collaborate with Change Analysts, Business Stakeholders and our IT colleagues (both UK and US) on a regular basis.
  • Drive innovation both in terms of how the group is using development technologies but more importantly, how they can enable the business to become ‘even better’.
  • Mentoring others and bringing new ideas based on previous experience, specifically someone with strong Azure DevOps experience across all the ADO capabilities (Boards, Repos, Pipelines etc.)
  • The ability to articulate the complex world of software development and IT in simple terms to others in a different field, will therefore require a strong and confident communicator.
  • The ability to prioritise their own work whilst meeting the demand from others for their time and support.
  • Strong estimation techniques, skills in user journey mapping, feature prioritisation, UI design and setting standards on those for which others in the team can adopt to ensure we have consistency across all applications.
  • Experience of managing technical debt and the approach to doing so with out over complicating it, experience in Application Portfolio Management (APM) would be a bonus.
