Full job description

Build software that makes a difference to how a growing business operates.

PASS Ltd is looking for an experienced Full Stack Developer to join our five-person development team in Thornaby.

You’ll take ownership of features from initial requirements through to delivery, developing PHP backend services and APIs alongside responsive, easy-to-use interfaces. Working closely with our developers and in-house designer, you’ll see the practical impact of your work across the business.

About PASS

Founded in 2001, PASS supplies test and measurement equipment and provides calibration, servicing and training to customers across the UK. We support industries including energy, utilities, construction, manufacturing, transport and the public sector, with sites across Teesside, Leeds, Glasgow, Belfast and Stevenage.

Our in-house development team brings together web and .NET developers to build and improve the systems that support our business.

What you’ll be doing

  • Developing and maintaining secure, reliable PHP applications and RESTful APIs.
  • Turning designs into responsive interfaces that work across desktop and mobile.
  • Designing relational databases, writing efficient SQL queries and managing data migrations.
  • Connecting applications with internal systems and third-party services.
  • Improving application performance, security and reliability.
  • Troubleshooting issues across the full stack and delivering practical solutions.
  • Working with colleagues to understand requirements, agree priorities and deliver well-built features.

What we’re looking for

  • Strong commercial experience developing applications with PHP and object-oriented programming.
  • Confident JavaScript, HTML and CSS skills.
  • Experience with relational databases such as MySQL, including database design and query optimisation.
  • Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs.
  • The ability to turn design layouts into accurate, maintainable interfaces.
  • A practical approach to problem-solving and clear communication.
  • Confidence working independently while contributing to a collaborative team.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage priorities and meet agreed deadlines.

Useful additional experience

Experience with any of the following would be welcome:

  • Angular, React or Vue.
  • Laravel, Symfony or another PHP framework.
  • Tailwind CSS, SASS or LESS.
  • Frontend state management, such as NgRx or Redux.

You don’t need experience with every framework listed. Strong PHP and JavaScript foundations, sound judgement and a willingness to learn are what matter.

Why join PASS?

You’ll have the opportunity to take ownership of features from start to finish, contribute ideas and influence how our applications develop. You’ll work alongside an established development team and designer, building software that supports real business operations.

Alongside your salary, we offer:

  • Company pension.
  • Life insurance through our Group Life Policy.
  • Health and wellbeing programme.
  • Company events.
  • Lunches on PASS.
  • Birthday vouchers.
  • Loyalty bonuses.
  • Cycle to Work scheme.
  • New Baby Bonus.

Working hours and location

36.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break each day.

This role is office based at our Thornaby site.
