Full job description
If you fit windows, you can already do this job
Frames, packers, out-of-square reveals, trims, scribing, caulking, making good. Plantation shutters are the same craft with tighter tolerances and a customer standing next to you when you finish.
What you won't be doing: lifting sealed units, working off scaffold, or standing in the rain in February. It's indoor work, in nice houses, one or two jobs a day, home every night. For anyone who's been humping glass for twenty years, that matters more each birthday.
Who we are
Stilton Shutters & Blinds is an established Peterborough company fitting premium plantation shutters, blinds and window dressings in customers' homes across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and the surrounding counties. We're growing and want one or two more fitters who finish properly.
The work
Surveying and fitting made-to-measure shutters, blinds and curtain poles in customers' homes. We supply every product and fixing. Jobs go into the diary as whole jobs - a straightforward shutter is around an hour.
You'll also:
- Measure accurately first time, so nobody goes back
- Leave notes for whoever fits it (steel lintel, tiled reveal, the right bit)
- Complete a short end-of-job form and photos on every job
- Ring the customer before the appointment window if you're running late
- Flag problems to the office early rather than late
Who we're after
Our best fitters have come from windows, glazing and general handyman work. What they have in common:
- Years of hands-on fitting. We'll teach you shutters in a fortnight. We can't teach a good eye or fast, clean hands.
- Genuinely good at finishing. Straight lines, tight scribes, tidy silicone, no callbacks.
- Fit and quick. Several jobs a day, ladders, drilling above head height.
- Sharp. Out-of-square openings and awkward customer requests get solved by you, on your own, in someone's living room.
- Presentable. For that hour, you are Stilton Shutters.
- Reliable. Turn up, turn up on time, ring ahead if you can't.
What you'll need
- Full UK driving licence
- Your own hand and power tools
- Self-employed (UTR) - your own tax and National Insurance
- £1m public liability insurance, or willing to arrange it before you start
- Comfortable working alone in customers' homes
A van can be provided for company work if you don't have your own.
The money, in full
- Training: £125 per day. Two weeks maximum for anyone who's fitted before - most pick it up quicker.
- Base rate: £125 per day, for each day booked and attended.
- Completion bonus: plus £25 per day - all that day's jobs finished to standard, on time, with the end-of-job form and photos done.
- Survey / lead bonus: £50 for every genuine survey or quote you generate - the neighbour who books because you were on the street.
- Rate review: base reviewed up to £165 per day for fitters who commit full-time and sustain the throughput and quality.
In plain terms: £125 a day for a fortnight while you learn, £150 a day once you're doing the job properly, and £190 a day once we've reviewed you up - plus £50 a time on leads. Paid weekly or fortnightly against your invoice.
We'll be straight with you: if you're on a good glazing rate now, the first two weeks are a step down. It's a fortnight, it's capped, and it's the only part of this that isn't better.
Snagging is on you - if your own work needs putting right you go back in your own time before that job's bonus is released. That suits people who get it right first time, which is who we're after.
What you get from us
- Full product training, paid
- Steady, ongoing work - most of our fitters want full weeks and we can fill them
- Indoor work in nice homes, for customers who've paid for quality
- A local patch, home every night, no away jobs
- A small professional team and an office that answers the phone
