Full job description

1:1 Outdoor Learning Teaching Assistant – SEN

Employer: Long-term Teachers
Location: Liskeard, Cornwall
Start Date: 2nd November
Contract: Full-time, ongoing with potential permanent contract
Mileage: 45p per mile
Driving Licence & Access to a Vehicle: Essential

Long-term Teachers are looking for an enthusiastic and resilient 1:1 Outdoor Learning Teaching Assistant to work with SEN students at a specialist provision in the Liskeard area.

This is a full-time position starting from 2nd November, with the potential to lead to a permanent contract for the right person.

This is not your typical classroom-based Teaching Assistant role. A large part of the position involves taking learning outside of the classroom and using practical, physical and community-based activities to engage and support students.

The Role

You will provide dedicated 1:1 support to an SEN student, helping them engage with education through activities that suit their individual needs and interests.

A typical week could involve:

  • Trips to local beaches
  • Walks and activities in parks and woodland
  • Swimming
  • Trampolining
  • Outdoor education
  • Sports and physical activities
  • Community-based learning
  • Practical and hands-on activities
  • Supporting classroom-based learning when required

The aim is to use these experiences to build confidence, independence, communication skills and positive relationships while keeping the student engaged with their education.

Who We're Looking For

Previous experience supporting children, young people or vulnerable individuals is essential. This could include:

  • Care or support work
  • Sports coaching
  • Youth work
  • SEN or mainstream education
  • Outdoor education
  • Residential or community support

You don't necessarily need previous Teaching Assistant experience. We're looking for someone who is active, confident, patient and able to build a strong relationship with a young person who may find traditional classroom learning challenging.

You will need to be comfortable getting involved in activities yourself, whether that's swimming, walking through the woods, visiting the beach, trampolining or taking part in sports and outdoor activities.

Driving Is Essential

A full driving licence and access to your own vehicle are essential due to the community and outdoor nature of the role.

Eligible mileage can be claimed at 45p per mile.

Why Apply?

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who doesn't want to spend every day sitting in a classroom.

If you have experience in care, sports coaching, youth work, education or supporting young people and enjoy being active and outdoors, this could be an excellent route into a long-term career within SEN education.
