Hydrogen Engineering Manager

East Coast Hydrogen FEED Project
Location: Thorpe Park, Leeds (3–5 days per week on site)
Duration: 12–18 months
Engagement: Professional Services Framework (Contract)

We are seeking an experienced Hydrogen Engineering Manager to support the delivery of the East Coast Hydrogen (ECH) Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) Project. This is a key leadership role, providing technically informed management across all engineering activities required to develop new hydrogen gas infrastructure in the North East of England.

About the Project

The East Coast Hydrogen project is a major collaborative initiative between multiple public bodies aiming to establish a 100% hydrogen transmission and distribution network connecting hydrogen producers, storage facilities and large industrial and commercial users.

Following the successful completion of feasibility and pre-FEED phases, we are now progressing into a two-year FEED phase, funded and focused on delivering a technically robust and investable solution to enable decarbonisation of industrial processes across Teesside, the Humber, Yorkshire and South Tyneside.

The Role

As Hydrogen Engineering Manager, you will be embedded within the ECH project team and act as the lead for all FEED Engineering and Design activities. You will provide strategic technical leadership, manage multiple engineering work packages and consultants, and ensure all engineering deliverables meet Ofgem requirements, duty standards, safety regulations and project governance.

This role will play a critical part in shaping the future hydrogen network and supporting key investment decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical delivery of Pre-FEED and FEED engineering activities in line with NGN policies, standards and governance.
  • Manage and coordinate multiple engineering consultants, including scope definition, selection, programme control and budget management (circa £10m).
  • Provide technical assurance, review and approval of internal and consultant engineering deliverables.
  • Coordinate engineering interfaces with other key stakeholders connected to the ECH network.
  • Act as a core member of the project management team, contributing to project strategy, programme development and risk management.
  • Support hydrogen innovation projects, standards development and technical specifications.
  • Ensure safe, compliant asset design aligned with company standards and best practice.
  • Define engineering scopes for key contracts and support procurement and tender activities.
  • Identify, manage and mitigate technical risks throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Contribute engineering input to environmental assessments and the Development Consent Order (DCO) process.
  • Ensure compliance with Process Safety, Technical Safety and Functional Safety requirements.
  • Support safe commissioning and long-term operational readiness.
  • Deliver regular progress updates and support governance and review processes.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in design and engineering management within the gas sector.
  • Proven experience in gas transmission and distribution, oil & gas, LPG, hydrogen and/or biomethane projects.
  • Strong knowledge of UK gas design standards and regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams and managing consultants on complex infrastructure projects.
  • Experience delivering large-scale FEED projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of IGEM, ASME, ISO, ASTM and API standards.
  • Strong commitment to process safety and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Experience working on hydrogen projects and understanding the unique technical challenges involved.
  • Knowledge of network analysis, flow assurance, environmental and planning processes.

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent engineering and infrastructure design knowledge.
  • Strong project management, organisational and leadership skills.
  • Effective communicator with strong stakeholder management and negotiation capabilities.
  • Ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements.
  • Proactive, solution-focused and collaborative approach.

Desirable

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering or similar.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
  • Design approver/appraiser certification.
