20 best jobs of 2023 (List with salaries and duties)

Updated 17 April 2023

There are multiple factors that affect the quality of a job, including salary, demand and flexibility. Based on its database and Indeed & Glassdoor’s Hiring and Workplace Trends Report, Indeed has identified the best jobs of 2023 in the UK. If you are looking for a new job, knowing the best options can help you make the right choice. In this article, we list the 20 best jobs of 2023 with their respective salary information and primary duties.

What makes these the 20 best jobs of 2023?

There are three factors that determine which jobs make it onto this list. These factors are:

  • opportunity

  • salary

  • flexibility

A job that scores well on average across these factors makes it onto the list. Opportunity means the availability of these jobs, the metric for which is the number of jobs per million. Salary means that the job pays above the national average, which was a median of £640 per week in April 2022 (£33,280 per year). Flexibility means that there are remote working opportunities, for which the metric is the remote work rate.

Consequently, if a job scores low on one of these metrics, it must score quite high on another to compensate. The information derives from Indeed’s research on up-to-date data and Indeed & Glassdoor’s Hiring and Workplace Trends Report for 2023. Danny Stacy, Senior Manager at Indeed’s Talent Intelligence, offers this overview and analysis:

‘Indeed’s 2023 best jobs list clearly highlights trends within our society. Solar Installers claiming the top spot for the best job in the UK reveals the increasing importance of sustainability, driven by the cost-of-living crisis and the climate emergency. Similarly, there has also been growth in demand for roles supporting healthcare and mental health, culture and inclusion in the workplace, likely catalysed by the pandemic.

Nursing and healthcare roles are clearly in high demand, making up forty per cent of our top twenty list, but offer lower pay and, largely, a lack of flexibility, issues currently feeding the ongoing strike action. It will be interesting to see how the industry reacts.’
