1. Tell me about a carpentry project you're most proud of accomplishing

They want you to provide detailed information regarding your previous accomplishments, highlighting your abilities. When responding, give examples of projects you've completed up to this point in your career. If you don't have much experience, try to give examples of projects you've worked on as an apprentice, intern or even a side project.

Example answer: 'Last summer, I worked as an apprentice and was part of a team that built a brand new porch for a family's home. We researched and designed the project from scratch, taking the client's needs and requirements into full consideration. The client was happy with the result and even commended my attention to detail and craftsmanship. They recommended our services to their friends, and we got two more jobs I was put in charge of.'

2. What are your thoughts on safety gear, even when it hinders your ability to move well?

Hiring managers and recruiters use this question to determine whether you're fully aware of industry safety standards and guidelines. They want to know that you always take steps to ensure overall safety, even if it means taking longer to complete a task. In your response, emphasise the importance of safety when working on-site and how it prevents accidents, delays and money losses.

Example answer: 'I believe safety gear is invaluable when working on a project. They protect everyone and reduce the risk of injury in case of an accident. I know safety is a huge concern in carpentry and construction, which increases the need to wear appropriate safety gear. Even if my safety gear hinders my movement, I always choose to leave it on. It gives me confidence and peace of mind knowing I'm protected from hazards such as falls and trips.'

3. What machinery or equipment have you worked with in the past?

This question gives recruiters insight into your knowledge of carpentry tools, machinery and equipment. It tells them you possess the skills required to use and operate machinery to complete projects. When responding, give specific examples of situations and projects where you've used carpentry tools and machinery. You may start by listing all the machinery you know how to use before picking one piece of machinery to expand on.

Example answer: 'I've previously worked with various heavy equipment, including scissor lifts, forklifts, welding machines and a range of woodworking machines. I'm comfortable operating this equipment and fully aware of the safety precautions required. In my last internship, we worked with scissor lifts numerous times, and I always ensured the load was well within the machine's capacity. I wore constraints while in the cab and ensured the area was clean and roped off so no one could enter when I was lifting materials. I'm also open to learning how to operate new types of machinery and equipment.'

4. What is the main challenge that you foresee in this role?

Interviewers ask this question to assess whether you've done your due diligence and identified any problematic areas. It also lets them know your ability to find viable solutions to problems. When responding, don't focus on challenges that make you seem inexperienced or incompetent. Instead, highlight your problem-solving skills and your ability to adjust accordingly to changes and mishaps.

Example answer: 'I've always worked as a freelancer, drawing, assembling, cutting and evaluating wood. This is my first attempt at formal employment, so I may take some time to adjust to the scheduling and working hours. I love challenges and taking on new opportunities, and I believe I'm prepared for this journey. I'm motivated to improve, work hard and learn from my peers.'

5. What sets you apart from other carpenters in the field?

With this question, hiring managers and recruiters want to know your unique and valuable skill sets, training or education. They may be looking for a particular qualification before hiring you or assessing the value you bring to the organisation. Take this opportunity to sell yourself by mentioning relevant qualifications, experience and technical capacities that fit the requirements of the role.

Example answer: 'I believe what sets me apart from other carpenters is my ability to seamlessly read and interpret technical drawings such as blueprints, building plans and excavations. I have a sharp eye for detail and can analyse even the most complex technical drawings to calculate measurements and estimate material quantities. I also possess good mechanical skills and have the physical coordination and knowledge required to work with extension ladders, circular saws, nail guns, chisels, extractors and laser levels.'

6. What does BOF indicate on a blueprint?

This question lets the interviewer know that you understand concepts and terms used in carpentry and can read and decipher information to perform your tasks correctly. In your response, explain what BOF stands for and why it's important.

Example answer: 'BOF stands for Bottom of a Footing. It's normally used to display how the baseplate attaches to the footing and if any additional reinforcements are required. The BOF is important in describing where the footing interfaces with the baseplate.'
