Class 2 driver

Absolutely awful place to work. Poorly loaded trucks not in order of delivery, cages broken/goods hanging out of them. Have never left the yard on time. Very tight delivery slots and no space to reverse at the yard so loads of damaged back ends. AWFUL. Do not be tempted by the £20ph pay it’s truly not worth it.

Hard work and stressful

Working for Blakemores is hard work with a lot of shops being handball deliverys. You get treated like rubbish by shop owners and then by management on your return. Transport management are a waste of time as none of them have a clue about the job and the difficulties you face on the road. If you have a bump your reassessed and disciplined. Only good thing about this company is getting experience. Always new drivers here as people are constantly leaving.

Pros

Discounts

Cons

Long hours, management. Company in general.

Would only recommend for experience

When starting blakemores I realised within 2-4weeks they have there favourites. If you moan you get better runs etc. Pay is OK but way too much paper work to get paid extra for empty etc, also handball at drops isn't exactly worth it for what they pay. Pay structure is not the best. Staff at the time were not organised one single bit.

Pros

Discount, experience

Cons

Pay structure, trucks are a mess, management

Poorly run

Whatever you do do not have a accident or be involved in one, you will be deemed a risk and will be sacked. Management as so poor it is unbelievable. Very poor health and safety culture though out business. Used to be a very good company, but now poorly run.

Pros

None

Cons

You think of it they will do it

Avoid

If you like getting up all hours of the morning anywhere from 02:30 to 06:00 and not being told until 7/8pm by text the night before then this is the job for you! It’s not just “pushing cages” either, you’ll be handballing cages into shops and fuel stations with really any help from staff. Make no mistake you earn every penny of your wages! Oh and not forgetting having to listen to longer serving drivers drone on about how it’s gone down hill etc

Pros

None

Cons

Never knowing what time you start until last thing the night before

Working at AF Blakemore (Spar)

Easy work. Rolling cages on and off the trucks. They take new passed drivers class 1 or class 2. Usually did on average 5 drops a day either local or long distance. They want you to work 5 days one week the 6 days the next. I worked through jobsworth recruitment in Halesowen. So I worked Mon-Fri £10 pH, Sat - £11 pH and Sunday £13 pH.

Enjoyable but very stressful

I thoroughly enjoyed working for Blakemore in the first 5_6 years, but as the company grew it became more and more stressful. In the end the job became less enjoyable

Aweful

Professional drivers are treated like non skilled workers. 20 or more drivers left in a 12 month period. You will be spoken down to by the office and told what you will be doing. You're told your start time from 4pm to 8pm the night time. You could be waiting for hours to be loaded before departing, with nobody able to tell you what's going on. There is no communication within the company at all. The driver is blamed by office for deliveries being late, wrong or missing. Many problems within the company, too many to list.

Awful place

Awful place to work used to be one of best jobs in midlands not anymore wages not really risen at all in the last twelve years drivers leaving every week sums the place up

A good job made hard

The actual physical aspect is good unloading the cages at the shops but the bonus system and the way they pay you is rubbish. if they scrapped the way they time the runs then it would be a really good job but you feel constantly done over by the way your paid. Management don't really care about your thoughts

Terrible

High turnover of staff especially drivers, handball is ridiculous. Cages poorly stacked and wrapped if wrapped at all. No one working there ever says anything good about the place, constant moaning from long serving drivers regarding the company going down hill.

Worst job ive ever had

Get paid peanuts for multi drop run with upto 15 drops and 30 plus cages of handball. No help whatsoever. The old drivers there are falling apart but will never leave. Just a number there, no loyalties they just want the work out. Bodged up trailers and on a bonus related job. Could be down for 12 hours , do it in 11 and get paid 10. Absolutely shocking. Its good for experience, that is it.

Management don’t have a clue

The company managers do not have any idea on what’s best for drivers or the daily running of the company, they never want to sought any problems that drivers have concerns about, they just bury their heads in the sand

Shocking company

Absolute joke of a company. Come across as being strict on health and safety but wanted me to take out an old truck with bits falling off without the right training. I refused to take it and got sacked, no warnings. Seeking legal advice.
