Atkins Employee Review

No job security, poor communication

Some great projects and great client accounts with really interesting opportunities and challenges. Very poor or non-existent communication between different environmental disciplines, between management team and fee earners and between teams in different offices.Limited visibility or work pipeline and low engagement with clients. You have to know the right client manager (which is a process of luck with no guidance on how to achieve this) to get a chance of a steady or engaging work load coming your way. Technical staff will have minimal contact with clients, its all handled by client managers who seem quite protective about this. As a result and despite promises at interview stage I had no involvement in any BD activities, strategies or initiatives for the first time in my 20yrs+ career. Good ideas die a death in committee and rarely progress. Everything is driven by a top-down approach so don't bother coming up with any good ideas or innovation.Inter-discipline communication in the environmental team, especially on complex bids/tenders, is appalling and feels like some teams are actively working against the companies interests or are not interested in supporting large bids. Too many staff are content to sit back and wait for work to land in their lap and cannot be bothered to more fully support bids even at the £million+ level. No job security at all. When key large contracts are cancelled or delayed then cuts are made by some very arbitrary criteria and without consideration for any less tangible non-fee earning issues or benefits. Very cumbersome project -

Pros

some very interesting projects and clients

Cons

poor communication, no security, very poor inter discipline integration

Used to be great

Atkins / Faithful+Gould used to be a great company until they started focusing on the bottom line. Then it got even worse when they were taken over by SNC Lavalin. Staff development is now not a priority. They paid below market which used to be ok when the company car scheme was great.

Pros

Flexible working

Cons

Focus on bottom line at expense of everything else

Supportive, with good progression and benefits, reward hard work

Atkins has been a great place to work for 12 years, and has provided the support required and opportunity to progress. Great technical expertise across a wide range of engineering and scientific disciplines means that help is always on hand and brings opportunities to get involved with interesting projects. There is a very disciplined work ethic in most offices, and it is not unusual to find yourself with a workload that requires extra hours of effort - however, this is usually recognised and rewarded.
