Jobs at B&M Retail
Worst company ever
Replenishment Manager (Former Employee) - Camberley, Surrey - 1 November 2023
Absolutely nothing to keep you at a job with these people...... bullying, inexperienced management, very low pay, long hours, no prospects. I can't say a single good thing about this place, and that's truly a first for me in 23 years in the business. They pay so poorly that the level of staff there is, sadly, very low. Consequently, there is little to no support when performing anything for than menial in nature.
Pros
None
Cons
Poor environment

Worst people and company to work for
What is the best part of working at the company? Location of the job and the discount What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The management team would talk behind everyones back. Hardly ever praised, always threatend with your job What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Health and safety standards was extreamly bad. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Always on edge you would be blamed for something and what gossip has been made up about you today

Warehouse Operative (Current Employee) - Bedford - 5 October 2023
Be fast and you can earn good money. Lots of shift patterns to fit your work life balance and opportunities to progress. No stress as long as you can do the job

SLTs that are not senior ruined the company
Store Manager (Current Employee) - Northampton, Northamptonshire - 8 September 2023
Now with the introductions of SLTs that are not senior or smart are judging the stores! Getting the same salary as a store manager and a paid for company car so they are actually on more money with less experience! No stress no responsibilities! Just drive round taking pictures! We have to work twice as hard 60-70 hours to please these people how demoralising ! Absolute insult and shocking company decision !
Pros
Free rubbish coffee
Cons
Expected to work over 40 hours for free !

Secure but nothing special
Customer Service Assistant (Former Employee) - Netherfield and Colwick, Nottinghamshire - 1 September 2023
the work itself was good, however the management was poor and hardly ever came into the store itself. The pay was dismal compared to the work they expected of you.
Pros

Cons
poor management, no training

Poor management
Supervisor (Former Employee) - Batley - 27 August 2023
Good job for when you're in-between jobs. Job is okay. Most of staff are fabulous to work with. Should be higher wage for the the stress of dealing with customers!

Depressing
Customer Service Advisor (Current Employee) - Paisley, Renfrewshire - 22 August 2023
A typical day is fixing people's mistakes that they have made. Tidying up the managements mess. Non trained management who make it up as they go. Management make up there own rules. I have learned to just mind my own business and get my job done and go home. A manager has no control of there stores as what the company wants for one store they want it for the rest of them which certain items just don't sell in some stores. Most enjoyable part is finishing and going home.
Pros
30 hour contract
Cons
Not enough pay for the amount of work put in, Doesn't matter how good you are your just a number in there eyes, No company benifits that are good enough to make it worth having a career

poor wage, poor work culture, disappointing benefits, horrible management
Casher (Former Employee) - Castleford, West Yorkshire - 19 August 2023
The work is incredibly dull, mostly standing at a till in silence waiting on customer interaction, while water is technically permitted bottles will be thrown out if left unattended most times. There is no incentive to do extra work and no work is rewarding. Managers will set your minimum hours to as low as possible purely to lower your holiday pay in my experience my contract was lowered from 25 to 18 while I regularly worked 32 weekly hours. While coworkers and customers are generally pleasant especially in the Castleford area managers are poor both in ability and attitude often leaving the site so go for smoke breaks or avoiding work by having conversations with customers off site. While other locations vary all have a poor work culture and lack work to keep you occupied during the shift.
Pros
easy work, next to no chance of being fired
Cons
contracts mean nothing and are set to as little hours as possible to take from holiday pay, wages are as low as possible, no real upward mobility, employers are purely reactionary and do not seek to make conditions any better, you are better off doing less work as you will be criticized for all work including extra given

Low pay, stupid shifts changing all the time. Staff leave and never get replaced.
Customer Service Assistant (Current Employee) - Barnsley Stairfoot - 13 August 2023
Usually I do 4 hour shifts. There's no break when you work 4 hours. If you do 5 hours you get one 15 minute break and if you work 6 hours you get a 30 minute break, the same for 7 hours. If you work 8 hours or more you get an hours break which you can take all in one go or split up. I learned that I'm very much a people person, not to say yes to all requests of over time because you get no better thought of and also that if I am sick I stay at home until I'm recovered because it's the type of company that will use you until there's nothing left of you. Management can be very much one rule for you, one rule for them. Workplace culture, they have favourites who can get away with not working as hard as some of the older ones. The hardest part of the job is working when it's warm and there's no air conditioning in the shop. The T shirts they give you don't help by being really thick material. Also when it's really busy and there aren't enough staff. The most enjoyable part of the job is that there are some lovely people that work there, especially on the tills and some of the customers are really friendly too.
Pros
10% staff discount and 10% off at Heron Foods
Cons
There's barely enough time to go to the toilet. Supervisors have to do long hours

Awful hours
Customer Assistant (Current Employee) - Bideford - 27 July 2023
Be sure to be ready have yours hours guaranteed more than 20hours or more but if its less then avoid as it will be cut to its lowest & it will be short notice at times. Just don’t work here unless your desperate or just really hate yourself.
Pros
Easy Work
Cons

Good place to work
General Goods Assistant (Current Employee) - Portlethen - 1 July 2023
Salary poor but staff are friendly We are out on lower hours contracts than we are expected to work ie staff work 30 odd hours every week but are given 15 hour contracts The turn over of staff is quite high and they do employee a lot of quite long staff so that they can pay them less
Pros
Friendly colleagues
Cons
Poor pay and lower hour contract than expected to work

Good people to work with , wages not good
Store Assistant (Former Employee) - Wolverhampton - 26 June 2023
Good team of people, the job was exhausting, working, pallets & cages . Hourly rate not good enough for the work you do . To many people trying to steal , they want you to be a security guard.
Pros
Nice people
Cons
Pay, not enough hours.

Not the best place to work
Customer Service Assistant (Part-time) (Former Employee) - Cardiff - 22 June 2023
Never any staff, no help from management, no benefits or initiative to work given from above. Literally a number on a piece of paper, if your face fits you have it all, if not you have to be able to stand up for yourself
Pros
Mostly short shifts
Cons
Management

Management awful
Recovery staff (Current Employee) - Swindon - 14 June 2023
No communications, lack of empathy towards colleagues, you’re just a number to them not a person, management awful, never see them, lots to do such little staff to do them, Job is pretty much straight forward and easy, it’s just everything else that’s wrong …
Cons
Management awful, salary poor, hours not suited to all

Can be great depending on management
Customer Service Assistant (Former Employee) - Leeds - 13 June 2023
When under the right management the place could be so much better. Overall the management are toxic expect you to work your life away regardless of age. They expect work as if you’re on £28 an hour not minimum wage.
Pros
10% discount
Cons
No work-life balance

Head office unsure where to take the company
Supervisor (Current Employee) - Manchester, Greater Manchester - 8 June 2023
Outside of the issues like lack of aircon/heating, unreasonable working hours (especially for those that are working unpaid above their salary) and lack of funding for staff, there is a bigger issue of a lack of direction on what this company is trying to achieve. It’s common practice to suddenly throw away ideas and practices for a new focus and for that to only get scrapped a month later. Constantly trying to save money with decisions and testing the waters on what is sustainable. Upper management constantly contradict themselves and expectations are too high. The shop must look in mint conditions all day every day as announced and unannounced visits are expected every single day, and ‘less than 8/10 is unacceptable’. It is a working shop with delivery piling up in all stores, but everything is catered to pretending that the shop is in a ‘day one’ condition.
Pros
Staff discount of 10%, increased to 20% occasionally
Cons
High expectations. Motivated through fear of area managers.

Fantastic place to work
Brand Coordinator (Current Employee) - Support office - 2 June 2023
Lovely company with plenty of opportunity to progress if you have the right attitude and work ethic, full of friendly and helpful people and fantastic benefits along with lovely perks such as ice cream Fridays and an on site canteen! Couldn’t speak higher about the company and encourage anyone with interest to apply!
Pros
On-site canteen, great management, additional day holiday given for every year with the company, kitchens with free tea and coffee on every floor, friendly people
Cons
May need to work overtime during busy periods but you will be given the time back

There’s Pros and cons
Sales Assistant (Current Employee) - Wolverhampton - 1 June 2023
I do enjoy working here and it is easy work however they do not give enough hours or money. So if you need a job that’s not a lot of hours it’s suitable
Pros
Easy. Small contract
Cons
Low salary, hardly any overtime
