Long hours, unpaid breaks, 8pm finish

Health Care Assistant (Current Employee) - Bourne, Lincolnshire - 20 September 2023
Great atmosphere at work as we all strive for the best to care for the residents. Whenever there's an issue, the management and line managers will resolve them straight away. Everyone is really friendly and hard working, always thinking about what the residents want and need, ensuring a high quality person-centred care.

Pleasant workplace
RGN (Current Employee) - Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire - 18 September 2023
Great place to work. Staff are respectful and friendly. Management is also supportive and treats everyone fairly. I would recommend to anyone looking for an RGN role.

Great team of people who share the same goal of providing top quality care to our residents
General Manager (Current Employee) - Cumbria - 15 September 2023
A really great organisation to work for. Well supported by senior management. I can honestly say that I love my job and feel valued. I wish I’d chosen this path years ago.

Good place
Housekeeping Assistant (Former Employee) - Darlington, Durham - 13 September 2023
Good place to work. Wage doesn't reflect job role. Has its good and bad days. Recruitment process appears slow. Every day is diffrent. Over all not a bad company to work for

Worst place I have ever worked
Care Assistant/Support Worker (Current Employee) - Kingston upon Hull - 12 September 2023
Full of bitchiness, never would work here again. Always understaffed, management is terrible. Many grievances put in and it was never noticed or managed.
Cons
Too much work for the pay you work for

Barchester is a great company to work for
RGN (Current Employee) - Somerset - 10 September 2023
-Typical day at work is mainly stressful lately due to staffing issues but have been told staffing will be increased as more recruits - I have learned to get more confident in myself -management is poor - hardest part staffing issues - the most enjoyable part of the job is when the residents get the person centred care
Pros
The values which Barchester ate looking for in their homes such as Respect, Integrity, Passion, Empowerment, Responsability
Cons
Staff afraid to speak up

No team work
Health Care Assistant (Current Employee) - Wells - 8 September 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Beautiful environment appearance of 5* hotel to look at. Behind the scenes lacking delivery of care. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Not enough compassionate carers What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Absolutely appalling environment culture is embedded .

Toxic place to work
Senior Care Assistant (Current Employee) - Balsall Common - 8 September 2023
The only benefit to working for this company was the pay and benefits. No support from management, unless you were flavor of the month. Toxic environment to be in. Families appreciate you more than staff and management do. Nice location to be in, hard to access without a car though.
Pros
Packages through pay
Cons
Toxic environment, long hours

Salary isn’t worth the culture
Advanced Nurse Practitioner (Former Employee) - England - 6 September 2023
Biggest mistake of my life, management don’t want to know about any issues, bullying of new employees is absurd, there’s a somewhat culturally accepted hierarchy within Barchester not based on role but time served with the company. Staff holidays dismissed due to other staff members being prioritised, staff skill levels imbalanced, communication difficulties. Many other issues within this company that due to identifying factors cannot be stated.

Great residents short staffed
Care Assistant (Former Employee) - Truro, Cornwall - 4 September 2023
It was quite a hard role and we were often short staffed. The residents made it a nice place to work though. 12hr shifts and lots of overtime available.

A dangerous place for a Nurse to work
Registered Nurse (Former Employee) - Truro - 2 September 2023
I had the misfortune to work for 2 years in the home. Serious safeguarding issues closed it to admissions for a year, we had 5 managers and 5 seputies came and went within that time. Severe staffing shortages. Poor practices and sadly very poor training or support of any kind. One RN for 2 units at night a total of 64 residents. Barely any care staff, serious lack of clean laundry and supplies. Residents left in wet clothing for hours and staff struggling to find continence supplies to help them. Admittedly this was the scenario a decade ago, I really pray there's been improvements. I tries extremely hard to change things while I was there but delta powerless, I did spend a lot of rime re writing all the care plans during the year the home was closed. There was a dreadful culture of blame, and the Nurses had absolutely no support from management. I left as I could not cope with how bad it was. The residents were often wrong placed in our unit as they were needing mental health care and our unit was for elderly frail people and there was a dedicated Dementia unit on the ground floor of the building. Staff turnover was massive and most shifts were run by agency some of whom had little experience and others with no compassion or care at all. All in all one of the worst experiences of my 42 year career.

Awful management no support
Health Care Assistant (Former Employee) - Ipswich, Suffolk - 1 September 2023
No induction or support when learning. Rude management who expect too much and support too little - expected to work when unwell which is dangerous for residents.
Pros
Free lunch
Cons
Unsupportive management

Hard work but very enjoyable and rewarding
Care Assistant (Former Employee) - Greenock, Inverclyde - 1 September 2023
As said I enjoyed supporting and chatting with residents. The work culture is ver much the way things are done here and the hardest part was managing residents and chafing while in bed on your own. The enjoyable part was engaging and chatting with the residents and seeing them settled and happy. Some of the Nursing staff could do more to support the carers particularly during night checks and changing, when low in staff.
Pros
Nice staff and access to training
Cons
Lack of nursing support on shortage of carers

Unpredictable
Care Assistant (Current Employee) - Northallerton - 29 August 2023
Days are very unpredictable with understaffed issues, agency. Staff can be 2 faced, but then so can management. Meals are nice, but never enough for a whole home.

Zero stars
Nurse (Former Employee) - Truro, Cornwall - 27 August 2023
It was a bad experience. Ther was a sup who shouted at a resident and works in ways that suit her. Not much support from the sups and treated like you are there to help make their job easier

Good team
Registered Nurse (Current Employee) - London, Greater London - 24 August 2023
Better support compared to others. Staff are pleasant to work with. Manager is quite supportive as well and listens to staff. Not the perfect workplace but definitely better than others
