Great for progression, but poor for work life balance

Boots is a great place to work, the career development is almost too good at times, as a company it is very easy to climb the ranks if you put the hard work in. The company is not very good for work life balance, so anyone wishing to work in a flexible environment or wanting to just do their 9-5 need not apply. If you don't mind working long hours and can handle a lot of pressure then you will do well.

Pros

Good progression and development

Cons

Long hours, stressful environment

High expectations

Senior management expect a lot. Communication is not always at standard it should be. Expect to be contacted regarding work during your annual leave and days off. No work mobile provided. As other reviews state, you end up putting in the extra hours to fill the gaps in your workplace and you get no thanks or pay for it. It’s expected. Career progression depends on your direct line manager, it’s not consistent. Standards are not consistent from store to store.

Pros

Staff discount

Cons

Unpaid overtime, lack of communication

Mixed

Salary is competitive but it is slightly detached from pharmacy role. You become more a shop keeper. There is flexibility to work around the country and career progression is good providing you are ruthless and target motivated.

Hardwork but rewarding

Hardwork and sometimes senior management expect miracles but with a great team around you, you can pull through and deliver. long hours, always work more than contracted hours with no thanks

Ok but seem to always be cutting back and stretching everything thinner

Pride themselves on customer care but continually cutting hours means you may end up giving up your time for free to help make that possible. Pay doesn't reflect amount of work you put in.

Boots great history to be proud of

Busy fast paced pharmacy and retail. The day goes so fast, from the minute you get in to the time you go home. A great team focus, Patient safety and customer care are the number one priority. Hardest part of the job is the pharmacy, fast, intense, and staff levels are minimal.

Pros

Benefits, pension, dicsounts, history

Cons

Long hours, low staffing levels

Lack of consistency

I have worked for the company for a number of years and for numerous Area Managers and Heads of Region. The salary package is fair but the bonus isn't. The consistency of leadership is not there and that was my biggest frustration. The teams are brilliant to work with and there's plenty of variety but the perfectionist ideology is not achievable under the current structure.

Pros

Salary

Cons

Consistency

reality of life in Boots is nothing like perception

Joined as a store manager with no previous pharmacy experience. Area manager showed no interest in my induction training then after 8 weeks I was placed in a very broken store both retail and pharmacy and then expected to turn things around. Was not allowed to spend salary budget or even back fill when someone was on holiday ( for 5 months as Region was overspent ) resulting in poor customer service and having to spend most of my days on a till. Pharmacist was in desperate need of coaching and development but I was expected to develop my pharmacy knowledge from them - blind leading the blind ?? Despite raising concerns to area manager was still left unsupported and expected to improve scorecards. All reviews were focused purely on results with no conversation ever about development / support / coaching. Company very penny pinching and pharmacy operations expected to run very under resourced to the point of being unsafe waiting for the dispensing error to happen. Dispensers very overworked and over stressed. I saw several assistant managers asked to run stores and rather than get promoted, receive an honorarium pay top up instead, then once they showed signs of struggling, rather than receive support, they were removed from that position and someone else put in instead and process repeated. Colleague washrooms very dated / grubby / dirty and often left with no toilet roll due to stores being told to save money. Very disappointed with my experience, unethical business with no interest in people and profits are put before patient safety. Glad to have found another job and left.

Pros

Discount card savings

Cons

Extreme penny pinching
