Good wage for unsociable hours

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Very good wage, induction week was mainly paperwork and videos so felt unprepared for my actual job role. Supposed to be 40 hours a week working night shifts with two days off but is really 43 would be more beneficial to do 4 on 4 off rota so you actually have a life outside of work as the two days off means you can’t easily go back to waking up in the day time. For 28k a year though you can’t complain.

Average at best

Pros - cheap food Cons - too many to list but management only bothered it getting the work done. No interest in peoples wellbeing or health and safety of employees.

Poor management and office staff

Very heavy loads and when you ask for help get told to get your head down and crack on. Maybe the job isn’t for you. Office staff talk you like a piece of dirt.

Management seems to be all for themselves

There is no connection between office staff and warehouse staff. It’s simply us and them. Nights staff are constantly put down due to being forced to do overtime. The back pickers shift is an absolute shambles. Higher management look through the workers as if they don’t exist. Team managers where excellent though an always went above and beyond to help.

Awful environment and poor management

Absolutely awful place to work. Senior management are a joke, so rude and arrogant. It’s who you know not what you know when it comes to advancement. Company as a whole pretends to care about its employees but it couldn’t be further from the truth. They work the good ones into the ground and take no responsibility when people leave.I wouldn’t wish this company on my worst enemy.

Pros

Cons

Good for first 3 months

*** Honest Review ***Worked at brakes for 3 months. First 2 months are great during training, just learning whilst helping another driver, then it all goes down hill. Work just gets piled on you and nothing you can do, actually working too many hours it gets dangerous. If you want to have no life and work all the time and have no energy for the weekend then this is the job for you. Don’t be under any illusions that this is not an easy job, it’s probably the worst around for HGV driving. When you work out the hourly rate with doing over 50+ hours every week, the pay sucks too. However that being said it’s a great place to go get some experience driving class2 vehicles for a few months

Pros

Cheap food

Cons

Long hours Weak pay Early starts No work life balance

Stressful with little support

There is little to no organisation or communication at Brakes. The delivery system makes no sense, warehouse pick your route onto pallets and its up to you to dig through these pallets to find the correct items for each drop. When the items have been found you have to manually scan each item, all of this could be avoided if management told the Warehouse to pick by order not route so drivers don't waste the best part of their day playing hide and seek.

Pros

Pay and benefits

Cons

Long hours and nonsense way of working

Fast paced, stressful, rewarding.

Worked for Brakes for nearly 4yrs now. Mixed experiences. Good pay, hard graft; I personally get on with managers. The job involved picking on site, delivering to schools hotels pubs, once you get to know the products when experienced you will fly through your route (when you get one) and finish from anywhere between 12.30-2pm. People finish later, but all depends how much you pick up during your training which can be 4-6Weeks with another driver on the road.

Pros

Pay, perks with service

Cons

Graft, got to be on the ball ready to learn

Not a bad place to work for the the right minded person

Job can be demanding at time's, but in all fairness it isn't to bad of a company to work for.Progression possible, but it does seem more dependent on who you know, rather than what you know.

Pros

Good Work Colleagues

Cons

Can be long hours at times

Tough at times

Very busy at times and also asked to help out other drivers even though you’ve completed your route in good time, sometimes making you finish later than the other driver you’ve helped

No work life balance

After 9 hours you are not paid . Impossible to finish in 9 hours . Runs are not done by location so could be 20-30 min drive between . Pallet work has to all be broken down by hand

Overworked, stressful and bad for your long term health

A good induction and training period lulls you into a flaw sense of security, giving you the idea that you will be able to start at 5am and finish at 2pm regularly. This quickly goes out of the window when you are out out on your own with 900 products, 3.5 tons and up to 20 deliveries to complete on your own, plus a one hour drive from the depot to your first drop and back everyday. The so called 45 hour contract you signed is never spoken of again. Instead managers refer to a 48 average hour working week, with up to 60 hours for “busy” weeks. And this is taken from your tacho, so breaks and POA not included. I was out of my house on average for 12-15 hours everyday. Not exactly a good work life balance. When concerns were raised, I was simply told “that’s the job”. The company likes to make a big deal about health and safety on paper. But the reality is driver being forced to cut corners due to dangerous loading and poor planning. Simply put, I have never been so stressed before as I was when working for Brakes. I lasted 6 months, and that was an achievement believe me. The turnover rate should show brakes there is an issue, but they won’t change anything because their only focus is making profit.

Pros

Access to cheap food, Good basic salary

Cons

Ridiculously long hours, excessive workload, promises made at interview not kept

Hard job keeps you fit

Ok place to work very hard but keeps you fit, can be a bit overwhelming because of the sheer scale of the operation there and often everyone is stressed From the top to the bottom but when it runs right it’s fine

Pros

Early finishes

Cons

Hard graft

Hard work

Not for the faint hearted. If you work hard enough then the job is ok and you can finish early. Hear of drivers work 11+hours daily which isn’t fair. Join at your own risk

Out dated

If you want to spend your days picking orders from a invoice this is the job for you with heavy graft on top and terrible route planning makes for a long day.

Could be better

Terrible management,Remember it's only a bad company because of bad managers, even the GSM has left now.Trainee managers who think they know how busy runs.Over 10 pallets of food waste each week,if only health and safety personal were to come, then this place would get a warning

Warehouse op

Not a bad place to work , can be cold and fast pace , overall not a bad place to work normal warehousing with a lot of customers and volume and good bunch of people

Overworked

Work 60 hours a week and get paid for 45, to get back within 12 hours you will have to work through your breaks with the amount of work and drops you are required to do, and management are fully aware of this happening and don't care about rules and regulations.

Extremely hard graft

The problem for drivers here is because brakes is so short of drivers they don't have enough drivers to cover rounds let alone send someone with you to teach you the job, if drivers do go with you they work at fast pace to finish work early (job and knock) which gives you no time to learn the products and paperwork and there's alot of paperwork to learn. The company needs to train you on two or three rounds only until you are up to speed and then introduce you to a new round but they dont. Its a killer job long hours driving blind and humping everything picking product in a freezer that is badly loaded looking for that one boxThe management do their best and are approachable in my opinion only a phone call away.Remember this is very hard work and to begin with its going to be harder as your learning. Some days you might get lucky to finish early but bank on at least 10 hours five days a week. You wont like the split week with only one day off tuesday and sunday if thats your rota You have to work one saturday in four

Pros

I've not found one

Cons

Back problems and overloaded trucks
