Hard but respectful

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Don't be under any illusion, this is a hard, physically demanding and sometimes stressful job. The hours can be long and some of the places you need to park up are eye watering BUT that said - there has clearly been a bug push on retaining staff - I've found the management team accommodating and what is more, human! I genuinely feel that I can speak my mind and get listened to. There is a feeling if collaboration rather than us and them which is refreshing. Furthermore, the induction training program is way above and beyond what I'd have expected, you get a LOT of hand holding which, for a newly qualified driver is a huge reassurance. So, overall I'd happily recommend working here, as long as you're willing to work hard for a fair wage!

Pros

Inclusive atmosphere and a fair wage

Cons

Occasional long hours and the odd stressful day

Cons

should be so much better

the more work you do the more they put on you, lazier people get away with murder whilst the workers are always put upon, the loading most days was awful so your struggling to do the basic drops,it started off as a really good job and still can be,but they have to get the work/life balance right, some middle managers lie to your face just to get you out the door,a lot of stress put on drivers

Hard work, but job and knock

Worked for them for 20 years, if you like hard work and a good workife balance, this is for you! But be warned they are a reactive not proactive company, when things go wrong the management will like to find someone to blame, even if the incident is forwarded. Management is always right and anything for an easy life!

Employment

I was employed for 12 years. Dismissed for an accident. Would have accepted a final written warning.Have overcome that situation at the time, showed my sincerest apologies and regrets of the matter in hand. Would have seen my career to the end at Brakes.Never mind.Good company tho.

Long days/disorganised transport team

No start times, routes are disorganised and badly planned, lorries never loaded on time and you will be left to load on your own, worked with them for 5 months never met the transport management only supervisors and they are everywhere but wont help in anyway just send you to next supervisor, get told you get a set route to know customers and routes but everyday was different unless u are good friends with the person who sorted you the routes and you will be working 12-14 hour shifts every day

Pros

Every sunday off, other drivers

Cons

Everything else

Very hard work

You will work 12 hours a day unless you break the rules. You will be treated as a number instead of a person. Most of your colleagues will have a limited grasp of English and common sense.

Pros

Money

Cons

Long hours, very physical

Poor work environment

Management are so disorganised, long hours all the time with no overtime pay. So many health & safety rules broken I am surprised they are still operating. Work turnover for staff is unbelievable given what this place offers. Company needs to come out of the dark ages and really look into themselves. Avoid if you can, only go for a short period if you are financially desperate. Nothing good to say about this place.

Productive and fun place to work.

Always busy at the start of your day as you have to get to the schools and hospitals on time and you constantly battling the traffic of London. You also meet a lot of people in the kitchens of schools and hospitals. Diverse work place. Hardest part is carrying heavy items up flights of steps. Most enjoyable is sharing bonuses when company do not get any parking tickets.

Pros

subsidise meals

Cons

some days of long hours when battling traffic and bad weather conditions.

Total rubbish

Worked for these cowboys 4 6months !! Management doesn't give a toss as long as work is done ! Too many favourites who only work half a shift, back in yard at 2/3 having spent 2 hours in a lay-by killing time, if you're not a good boy your lucky if you're finished at 5/6 12 HR shifts running your nuts off ! Wouldn't work for these unless it was 50k a year !!! Not gunna happen !!!

Cons

Everything unless you kiss butt

Hard manual work

On the whole Brakes is a good company to work for. Hard work, long days and lots of manual handling. The team of drivers are a fun, helpful bunch who will back you up when needed.

Pros

Free Uniform, paid holidays, good team of drivers

Cons

Long hours, hard manual work, lots of unnecessary duplication of paperwork

originally when known as Cearns & Brown, this was a very enjoyable company to work for.good team spirit.this weakened when sold & taken over by Brakes.

When I started employment with Cearns & Brown the staff, which included telesales, warehouse and management, worked as a team and treated the customer with care & respect.this continued when sold & taken over by Brake Brothers.but when Brake Brothers retired & the company became Brake Foodservice employee`s found themselves separated from management & in my(and other members of staff)opinion alienated.although on Brakes property, health & safety became a big issue, once"on the road"safety was ignored.a good relationship with all customers remained and the service by immediate staff who came in contact with them, was always first class.

Pros

flexible starting hours.good modern equipment, excellant rates of pay.including bonus`s.

Cons

safety issues ignored, overloaded vehicles.loss of care & interest by other employee`s

good salary but difficult

brakes offer good salary but alot of responsability ,and hard work . many rules and regulations because of food and driving laws .. i learned to deliver 20 -30 deliveries a day , quickness and streamlining essential in this role . management under alot of pressure to get about 100 drivers happy and deliver within the time scale . co works can be helpful at times if they happen to be available . hardest part is awkward customers and dellivery points without reasonable access. most enjoyable part is a cuppa and a sandwich from the customers who appreciate you ...

Pros

early start and a good day early finish ..

Cons

too much paperwork and rushing around
