Unorganised

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
When I started everything was very good and organised. The Manager at the time knew what she was doing and everything was under control. My manager left and everything went downhill. People started to leave, they weren’t paying people correctly, making people work overtime for free, making you do things you shouldn’t do and treating you unfairly. They’re very unorganised and stingy. Need the old manager back. I felt uncomfortable working with my manager as he had a low temper.

Pros

Free food

Cons

Toxic

Very bad place

I used to work at Minster Mill next to Witney for some time, and only what I can say is: don't waste your life for this place....Stunning place and location, but that's it what is amazing about this place, unfortunately.Very long hours, very poor communication, none existing management, underpaid staff, don't paid overtime, chef working all day long sometimes without break, all the time there is problem with something (people forgetting about functions or booked parties...)...All the time staff rotation, especially in the kitchen (most of the time agency chefs cause no one is interested to come and work for this company)

Pros

Long hours, not much to learn

Cons

Great team, great managers, beautiful hotels

I worked as part of the central support team and enjoyed my time at Brownsword Hotels. It is a 24/7 business so it is always busy, but that is expected for any hotel business. The relationship between central support and the hotel teams was easy despite the distance of some. The General Managers and heads of departments were very friendly and it was great to work alongside them to help keep the central functions running smoothly.

Pros

Great team, great training

Cons

24/7 business, so it it is busy!

Really nice company to work for

The hotels are all lovely, they have a great development program so you can develop your career and they pay more than minimum wage for all roles. The team have really bonded and it is fun to come to work each day. It is the first place that I can say that the staff food is really good, and a nice play for the team to relax on our break.

Pros

Great quality, fun team

Head office will run this fine countryside hotels into administration.

Hotel manager is cleaning rooms, head gardener is doing night shifts, restaurant manager is doing maintenance.. minimum pay, no appreciation. Worst CEO and Head office you'll ever encounter. Completely unrealistic demands, constantly short of staff. No loyalty scheme to reflect pay reviews, staff over 5 years are still on living wage.

Pros

hard to find any.

Cons

Pay minimum/living wage. No pay structure, no loyalty scheme other then some vouchers, short of staff, promises after promises.

Hi,We were concerned to read your comments- please can you contact us directly at hradmin@brownswordhotels.co.uk so we can discuss them?Just to confirm we have committed to paying the real living wage, which is quite far about the national minimum and this has been communicated recently to all our teams, and we have taken a number of steps to recognise and reward everyone that has been working so hard since we have re-opened, in what are difficult circumstances for everyone. We really hope we get to chat to your about your views and what we have done to date and our plans going forward. ThanksAndrew Brownsword Hotels

Unprofessional management

The stunning location is the only good thing. You can tell the management want to take advantage of their staff by offering low pay and not guarantees at all about your hours. As many hospitality related businesses, they use the pandemic as an excuse for everything.

Hi,I was saddened to see we have not heard from you after our request you get in touch with us directly. We really wanted to chat with, especially so we could be clear that we don't offer 0 hour contracts or any contracts with non-guaranteed hours. We also offer very competitive rates of pay and don't pay the lowest rates that National Minimum Wage allows, as we don't believe that is fair to our teams. We'd love to chat to you about your experience, but if we don't get to do this, thank you for your feedback.ThanksAndrew Brownsword Hotels

It was a good place, nice team, the management very supportive. I would recommend it. I was happy to work there, unfortunately, the lockdown stopped us as they should close the hotel.

Hard stint awful pay

If it wasn't for your work colleages, life would have been unbearable. A culture of good but not good enough. When things get tough theres always someone to blame for it and its certainly not the management, whom appear to just be there to tick boxes and serve themselves! Any reasonable good ideas you put forward get shelved or blatantly ignored. If you want to be treated like a child in an untrustworthy manner and paid shockingly for the workload and responsibility, then this is the place for you!

Pros

Work colleages

Cons

Poor management, salary, treated like a child.

Stuck up

No professionalism, if you raise an issue you are concerned about expect to be ostracised. Shockingly low rate of pay, massive responsibility. Personal health and safety measures not in place.

Pros

Nice setting

Cons

Low pay, no support

Poor lack of care for employees

A typical working day is mostly enjoyable until it gets busy and management puts too much stress onto normal employees. The upper management is often clueless for example an Ops manager not knowing the restaurant menu or how to operate the till, as well as not knowing the price of packages the hotel offers. The most enjoyable part of the job is making new friends.

Pros

Job progression

Cons

Long hours, no breaks, no staff food

Excellent

...I was a KP on a small team of 3 but had daily interaction with all the chefs and waiting staff . I lived in the Cotswolds so I already knew about the beautiful building and gardens -But what came as a very pleasant surprise was how friendly the staff are and how welcoming they are to all nationalities , ages etc... Also , during my time as KP other opportunities arose for carreer development within the company - Another big plus for me was that I found the management to be very approachable , very reasonable and very capable in all my dealings with them - In short , my time as KP has been such a positive experience

Pros

Excellent team comradery -Career opportunities - Free Lunch

Cons

sad to leave :-(

Not my favourite place to work

Any hotel career is hard work but Brownsword is really quite a hard stint to do. Beautiful hotels and great product, but unstructured support for the sales team and a fearful culture created by CD and other directors in the chain. I was often ill before management meetings fearful of not doing things perfectly. Not a nice job to be in and I was glad to leave.

Pros

Stunning hotels

Cons

unapproachable and tyrant directorship
