Need to train their advisers and not promote staff just because they are family or friends

I worked here and was shocked to the limited knowledge across the team. Not the staffs fault. Unfortunately some trainers and managers are not cut out to do the jobs and need to retrain. This was only in money advice team. I am not able to comment on any other department in the council. Unfortunately there are far too many temporary contracts and not enough permanent contracts offered. A lot of the opinions across the council is if you are not a good friend or a family member of some of the senior managers then you will go nowhere. Too many staff are promoted because of who they know and not on how well they can do the job.

Cons

Management, Training and working thursday evenings and some saturdays

Managerial shambles

There are far too many managers at Telecare Cardiff. Only 1 or 2 of all the managers actually care about the work and have half a clue in management skills, the rest are absolutely diabolical, and that includes all Head management too for seeing and ignoring. None of the departments within Telecare are run to an acceptable standard. If you're a conscientious, hard working, caring employee, then Telecare is definitely NOT for you. If you would prefer not be treated poorly and unfairly as a reward for compassionate, dedicated work, then I would highly recommend staying far away from Telecare. A very plauground type atmosphere, an upsetting and mentally unhealthy environment to work in.

Pros

The Cons far out weigh any Pros

Cons

Management. 90% of staff. Work ethic.

Lovely place to work, however....

Worked for them for quite a few years, doing adhock work, in different hubs across Cardiff. Colleagues and other stakeholders were lovely and supporting eachother as the amount of work is massive, however low or medium level Management is poor and don't care about it's own staff. If you want to grow proffesionally get ready coz you will not only have competion (which is normal) but you'll also have to put up with a system that promotes nepotism and affinity bias. Yayk!

Pros

Nice work environment

Cons

You have to know someone who knows someone to go up the ladder

Don’t waste ur life

Don’t ever think that helping other in there job trying to gain experience to work ur way up or even training matters... all that matters is who u know and if they like you and want to prep u for the jobs that they have available.. they always have someone in mind for the position.. they have managers that can’t even do their job.. and all work that u put in is never appreciated..

Pros

Good training opportunities

Cons

Long list

good place to work

if you can get a job in the council, within the social letting team - DO NOT PASS IT UP. very very very good place to work. friendly place to work, good paced environment. although i regularly got bored(as not enough work for me for a full day) so i used to clean the office and staff kitchens instead.

Good rate of pay and annual leave entitlement.

Cardiff council are very loyal to their employees. They can offer extra overtime if available. The rate of pay is better than any where else. Annual leave entitlement is also very good.I have worked for the council for many years and only left once for what i thought was a better employment offer, only to return to the council shortly after.

Pros

Paid holidays, good team support.

Cons

sometimes have to cover for others at short notice.

hated it. stressful and underpaid

wasn't happy at all with working for them. They are selective in whom they employ based. If your face fits then you are ok. unfortunately. hated working for them.

Dreadful culture

Absolutely no progression route, inter departmental scrabble constantly for power. It's not about services or quality, its about senior officers gaining power politically to enhance their progression

More work, less staff

Over the last 10 years the council has continued to provide services to its citizens with less staff and resources than ever before. The staff work hard in very difficult circumstances

Well intentioned chaos

The first thing that hits you when you enter Willcox House in south Cardiff is the smell of the toilets, it’s all downhill from there. As a new recruit you might want to see an organisation chart of your dept., or the council even, well tough luck there aren’t any. Perhaps business process descriptions???? 😊😊😊 you’re joking. Well you might find out more on the induction course, except there isn’t one. Training is basically picking up the job from those around, which is how to permanently embed bad practice and inefficiency. IT systems are a ragbag of the monstrous SAP, various out of date packages and uncoordinated bespoke applications built and maintained on a sort of hobby basis by one or two individuals who hopefully will never leave or fall under a bus. Still, maybe your managers will help? Unlikely, between my post and the council cabinet member responsible, there were four managers, two of whom I never saw in a year of working there, as for the chief executive I visualised him as some wizard of oz figure, although I never made it to the emerald city.

Pros

Most of the staff really try to deliver a good service to the people of Cardiff.

Cons

Negligible training, low salaries, the constant threat of cuts, unresponsive and barely visible managers, lack of further opportunities, and poor office accommodation IT systems and equipment.
