Stressful and not worth it.

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
started out great, first week was okay, got my shift pattern, and thats where it went wrong... They call you when it's your day off or you know you're not rota'd in, and ask why you're not at work guilt tripping you and demand you come in also threatening to take wages off you that you have earned. constantly short-staffed, you have to do 3 peoples job, whilst trying to do yours and lunch breaks don't exist. You're constantly on the go from 7:30am (shift are at 8am - 8pm) until about 8:30pm, you start early and finish late with no extra pay, no thank you, no nothing.

Pros

nothing to be honest.

Cons

long hours, missing wages, poor wages, don't pay what you're owed, lunch breaks dont exsist.

Stressful with little to no support

Different care uk homes pay care staff different hourly rates. High staff turnover. A lot of agency care staff used. No support offered when mental health is effected by the job. Everyone has their own way of doing things within the company. Care staff have decisions made for them and are expected to follow them without having an opinion on the matter.

Mostly short staff they expect the world for minimum wage

At first it was good ,, management think there better than you , never step in to help are always in the office eating,,, when visitors are in ear shot out they come and interact with residents...it’s a business that’s it

Pros

None

Cons

Poor pay, they change your shift at the drop of a hat, don’t plan anything on your days off

Management don't care

My current manager doesn't care about care staff, if you want to progress and you ask about the progression courses you never recieve anything back, They don't show appreciation for good work but will pull up even the slightest negative in a second, the staff turnover rate is through the roof and nothing is being done about anything any of the staff request plus we are constantly understaffed with the common excuses of if one person can do it everyone can do it which is untrue.

Pros

Payment is on time

Cons

High staff turnover, Poor management, Understaffing, unrealistic expectations, little to no teamwork

Not a nice place to work only the lovely residents keep you going

I have worked as a care assistant for many years but this has been the worst company I have worked for. Bullying is the order of the day by the nurses and management although there are some nurses who are lovely to work with Management is not supportive at all as they will only listen to the bully’s side of the story. You work hard but no one appreciates you instead its all aboutbfault finding and blame culture.

Official response from Care UK Residential Care Services

23 December 2019
Thank you for taking the time to provide your comments. It is concerning to read a reference about bullying. Care UK adopts a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and harassment and it is within our best interests to resolve this for you as soon as possible. In the first instance, we would encourage you to speak with your Home Manager about how you are feeling. If this is not possible or hasn’t been successful, then please do make further contact with the HR Department at the support centre and we will ensure that an investigation is carried out.Care UK Careers

Avoid if you actually care

This company seems to struggle to keep staff. A lot of agency but still you work short staff. The residents suffer as left in rooms most of the time due to not enough staff. Managerment don't care about their staff or the residents. No support by them. Expectations are ridiculous. Bullying culture by the manager. Raise issues that are not addressed as it will cause additional work. Minimum wage for a job looking after such vulnerable people. Unpaid breaks. No sick pay so you better stay healthy. Staff moral is very low and gossip about everyone.

Pros

Residents

Cons

Bad management poor care

Care uk enfield

I worked at Elizabeth Lodge as a healthcare assistant and I left as soon as I could.. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Management are awful and staff on the units are rude and unhelpful when being a new starter.

Would never work for this company again

Never have i come across such a poorly managed place in all my life, staff are taken for granted and worked to deaths door ! Shifts changed at last minute and are expected to just know without being told constant understaffing homes too big for the ammount of staff that are put to work .

Pros

Unorganised management, admin staff rude, and too many chiefs not enough Indians

Hardly any staff! Frequently the only carer for the unit if not the only member of staff for the unit! Frequently don’t get paid for extra shifts even though it is an electronic fob clock in clock out system! Admin staff rude, intimidating, unprofessional and storm around slamming doors, shouting and pointing their finger at you when you enquire about your wage! Added for extra shifts without any knowledge, for it then to go on your record as unauthorised absence! Hardly any gloves or wipes to use on your shift, nets are hidden by day staff and like gold dust, if you find a pair it’s like you have won the lottery! Too many chiefs and not enough Indians! When your wage is short you can have it back alright but only 68% of it! Residents know why you have been off sick because staff gossip around them, nothing gets done or sorted just brushed under the carpet, two faced staff, nothing exciting for supper for the residents as they close the main kitchen at night time, no time to take your hour break throughout the night due to either working alone or too much paperwork... understaffed, underpaid.. the list is endless.. no decent cleaning products provided just an unpleasant spray which gets on your chest and throat and doesn’t take away the smell of urine or feaces! Your personal details such as telephone number and address will be pinned to the unit wall for any tom or dic to see which breaches data protection of employees personal information.. so so many things wrong here

Pros

Caring for residents who need assistance, meeting new people, being there for residents to chat to and any other needs

Cons

Working alone frequently, no nets hardly or gloves and wipes because they are hidden by other staff, two faced staff, underpaid, poor management, too many chiefs not enough Indians

Awful

Not enough staff to properly care for residents, Nursing staff nowhere to be seen, management don’t take complaints seriously, no training, no time for a break, no sick pay, holiday time off near on impossible to get authorised, families treat you like dirt, senior staff literally have no respect for carers. The worst place I have ever worked

Pros

Free food if no ones watching

Cons

12 hour shifts bad management and seniors

Understaffed and over worked.

I left nearly two decades ago I know that this branch has had several new mangers in that time, so I cant realy comment on recent work place. Was a good place to work until a third new manager took over in less than a year and wanted to replace all staff with ones he chose creating a bad working environment. However the majority of original the staff were good and helped each other and helped the residents new staff were mostly bank staff but we provided care as best as possible given the low staff ratio for type of demanding residental care required. Review is based on outdated experience.

Pros

Caring for the residents

Cons

Low pay and minimum staffing levels.

demanding but fun workplace

a typical day at work was a long 12 hour shift. it was enjoyable as the other HCA's were easy to work alongside and the residents were all very chatty. i learned good communication skills as i nhad to talk to a wide selection of people. management were good within the home and were always there if you had an issue or needed help. the hardest part of the job was having to say goodbye to residents that had recently passed, as you get an attachment to them. the most enjoyable part of the job was being able to talk to the residents and learning about their pasts.

Pros

free lunches

Cons

-bad pay -no progression -can be stressful

Fast paced and friendly work

I have worked night shifts and day shifts as a carer in the residential home. At times the job can be very stressful and vigilance is very important. I always keep a professional relationship with my residents however I find it difficult to not become close with residents and this makes it harder when they become ill or pass away. I would not change this about myself however, as I think my sensitive and emotional nature helps me to be the best carer I can be. I've come to enjoy thinking on my feet and keeping up with work on a time limit. I find the night team to work very well together. As we have all come to know one another, we focus on each carers strengths in order to deliver the best care to our residents. My favourite part of my work is simply working with people. I enjoy talking with residents and families and doing all I can to keep them happy. I also enjoy learning new things and finding opportunities to improve myself as a person. I believe there is always room for improvement.
