project Manager in Oxfordshire
on 24 May 2019
Management structure
Worked there for a number of years. Mis-sold the role and undermined by another new starter. Middle management at cross purposes with higher managers. Communication practically non-existent and the level 5's seem to take the brunt for everything. Very political and has a very unhealthy ethos of allowing workers to do a job that they're not trained for. Health & Safety looks good on paper but in reality its always pushed back for the sake of the experiment ops. You can get easily black balled if your face doesn't fit!

Exciting, friendly, supportive, growing
Great place to work. Campus environment with friendly helpful staff. Supportive and open working culture. Clear mission and goals disseminated to all staff so you know your role in the big picture. Support staff valued, technical teams valued, normal organisational politics, exciting to be part of something that growing and that is going to have such a big impact on the planet. New executive team driving growth.

CCFE - underfunded
Not for profit research business with a pay cap and dwindling funding as its replaced by a new site in France. Trying to turn into a profit making business and diversify the site into a science park.
Overall its a pleasant work environment with a good variety of skills and nationalities, never time to get bored. They do support professional registration well. Excellent workshops.
The management? Varies from section to section. Project planners wanted parts bought before designs were completed. Nobody knows how the funding works. Political creatures. Some managers understood engineering, others could not turn down an air con system and abused the complaint system.
Hardest part of the job - completing your tasks with other interfaces/people deliberately obstructing you, trying to complete theirs first. OR someone else trying to hijack the task and add it to their overtime - or stealing your resources. Empire builders kidnapping plant. Planners then telling you to follow their diagrams of fantasy. High staff turn over/illness. Suicide, dementia, obesity etc
Most enjoyable part of the job - when the scientists got what they wanted from the plant and the complaining stopped for a while- ironically leading to no overtime and staff cuts.
If you like variety and laugh at stupidity but don't criticise anything or care about deliverables (they will always be late) it's a fine life at CCFE. It is actually a very difficult workplace, improved by a superior SAP implementation and constant staff review processes.
My JET boss was great. The objectives were "make it work" and the rules were "no fighting, nicking or skiving".

Scientific Environment
Working in scientific research is both challenging and rewarding. We are given the time and opporunity to get things right first time in appropriation with the running of the 'Shutdown Plan'. Following appropriate quality and standards ISO 9001 is the bench mark set for this organisation.
