A rewarding job as part of the community providing services. Can be quite quiet in the winter months. Pay is somewhat acceptable for the role. Good colleagues

Was a fun place to work

Person centred and really made a difference for the people accessing the service. I believe things have changed following budget cuts which is sad for those who no longer meet criteria for receiving a service.

Regimented now

I've worked for Edinburgh city council for 30+ years . As carer working for Edinburgh city council my mental health has declined in a very bad way. So if you're thinking this kind of job run a mile and don't look back the office staff don't give admn if you can access transport or you have to walk over 4 to 5 miles in one day and it's split shifts which is dreadful . When the council brought the split shift work we we're told to like or lump in other words seek employment elsewhere that's how much they care about there employees. More and more work keeps getting added to the job description that was not in the job description before. Would not recommend working for the counci homcare sector.

No work life balance

Worked with them for many years but left due to toxic work culture, inefficient management and ridiculous rota, staff are not treated equally and issues amongst staff are not addressed

Professional inclusive staff

Great staff. Very challenging workload sometimes and no experience/ training needed which needs to be addressed. I made great friends who I could rely on.

Pros

Leant a lot from teaching staff who gave you lots of freedom to work independently.

Cons

Pay is terrible, too many ASN needs, and not enough staff .

Terrible management

Managers are corrupt, recruitment is a joke, seniors take advantage, supervisers and seniors are employed for ability to say yes to bosses, no skill.

Great if you have children.

Can’t complain about the holidays but they reduce your wages to cover you been off during school holidays. If you work more than 16 hours you’ll be fine.

Person centred care

Teamwork and feeling supported and listened to. Reasonable hour and break time . A good manage helps and there is support when you need some whether it’s family or in career advancement

Structured poor pay

Monday to Friday 36 hour week Very little opportunity to progress and continue education Very slow work processes Poor travel payStructured salary banding can take over 5 years to move up slowly

Constant change and reviews

Departments under constant review and change. This leads to high level of stress. Management appears not to have a clue about what my job is supposed to be about. Someone has to die before any progression opportunities arise. No agreed career structure.

Good secure job

Good secure job. Busy days and hard work. Some opportunities to move and take on extra work. Not enough investment in its staff however and long-term employees are mainly older and waiting for retirement / the perk of the council pension.

Schools are chronically underfunded

I would not recommend working as a PSA to anyone anymore sadly, given how low the salary is and how stressful it is working within schools which are constantly struggling for resources. Edinburgh Council will only contract you for part time hours to work as a PSA which keeps your salary down at a ridiculous level while the work can leave you too exhausted to consider a second job. The contracted hours are not enough for you to properly do your job either as you end up starting not long before the children arrive and your hours end before the children have all left, leaving the classroom unsafe and understaffed (especially within SEN schools). This also doesn't leave you enough time to set up and clear up either end of the day. Contracted duties are often vague and left up to interpretation which can leave you feeling vulnerable and overworked. My experience of working within several schools has been that the buildings are generally in need of a great deal of maintenance and are often overrun with mice. Under-staffing is a common issue which leads to unsafe situations.Pay is well below inflation and leaves you feeling undervalued and taken for granted.I have found the HR department to not always be particularly helpful. Often multiple phone calls to different people are required before anything is sorted. Definitely join a union if you're considering working as a pupil support assistant.

Pros

PT hours may suit some people if you can afford to live off a low salary

Cons

Low pay and a stressful, under-staffed working environment

Ok

Could be better pay doesn’t stand up to the cost of living in Edinburgh. Most people are quite nice and they have a good and supportive HR department.

Fast paced and stressful but rewarding

I have worked with the council for 10 years. The past 4 years being in health and social care. You are treated fairly but sometimes you are over run with service users and don’t get enough time to spend with them. However it is very rewarding and the management are fair. Not a great work/life balance and you work long hours and split shifts.

Pros

A very fast paced busy job with is very rewarding

Cons

Long hours and split shifts. Also having to work Xmas day if it falls on your shift.

Lagging behind culturally - but it's progress

It's years behind where it should be and it's a difficult place to drag into the future especially when job security is so high. Getting rid of the dead wood is near impossible and makes for a morale sapping environment.

Pros

Work life balance is good

Cons

Poor leadership

Good job

Not bad place to work for .Friendly atmosphere .There are few bad eggs just like everywhere else but most folks work hard and you can rely on them. Not the best management .

Pros

Good vehicles, not bad money and benefits - best pension scheme in the world

Cons

Management
