Super company to work for, best decision I've made!
Member Pioneer (Current Employee) - Birmingham - 24 July 2020
Featured review
Co-op Group selected this as a representative reviewTo begin with, I must admit, I kind of fell into my role at the Co-op: a community based job that involves working with local charities and causes. However, it was the best decision I've ever made! The salary and benefits are great and everyone is so helpful and friendly!
This job has allowed me to thrive and my team have helped me realise my potential. I would definitely recommend working at the Co-op!! My role allows me to do what I love, which is working with charities to make a difference in my area, and makes me feel very accomplished.

Store Manager (Current Employee) - Manchester, Greater Manchester - 30 June 2022
Hard work and challenging….but isn’t all retail right now. Very disjointed and distant from HO in the stores, new CEO seems to be rectifying. Great staff

Nice team and benefits, disorganised management
Customer Team Member (Former Employee) - York City Centre, North Yorkshire - 27 June 2022
Good benefits and fair breaks and pay, but often long and unfair shifts like closing then opening the next morning and really disorganised, would constantly book holidays far in advance then be given shifts through them

Mixed Bag
Customer Team Member (CTM) (Current Employee) - Essex - 25 June 2022
At times it can be engaging and fun when with colleagues or working on the shopfloor/stacking the shelves etc. However, I personally found being on the till very very boring and stressful. As a worker there you are expected to do both and will have to work 8-hour shifts standing behind the till all day fairly often. As well as this I was on a 12-hour contract but often worked 16-20 hours and occasionally around 30 hours over the space of 4 days whilst also being at college. So if you want this job part-time I would recommend giving set hours you can to work and if they won't be able to work around that then maybe it's just not the right fit job. Despite this, all my colleagues are lovely and always helped each other get through the shift as stress-free and easy as we could. And I would recommend this to people as long as they don't mind working overtime and being on tills as well as the shopfloor.

Good place to work.
Customer Service Assistant (Former Employee) - Grayshott - 24 June 2022
Working at this store, I was usually on the front line dealing with customers, which gave me an opportunity to develop connections with regular shoppers. Once a few back room issues were sorted out, things ran fairly smoothly, and I never had a problem with the management. The only drawback was the gradually reducing number of hours. Apart from that, no real problems.

Stressful
Team Leader (Former Employee) - Llanelli - 23 June 2022
Some stores are 1 on 1 which means you have to work the till and put stock out. I enjoyed working there for the first 3 years then it all changed, they brought deliveroo to the store I worked at which was one on one and it was hard. The team I worked with was brilliant, you can have a laugh and still get the job done.

Poorly run by clueless execs
Store Manager (Current Employee) - Horsham - 23 June 2022
The Coop has gone downhill over the years and unfortunately the years of cutting costs on stores payroll and not paying colleagues a decent wage is going to be their downfall. Work life balances are poor, pay is poor, workloads exceed what you can achieve on the budgets given even if fully staffed, being treated fairly compared to others when you're in the management levels goes out the window. This business does not reward or encourage loyalty, stay away from the coop if joining as a manager.
Pros
Plenty of stores to work in
Cons
Everything else

Not bad
Team Leader/Supervisor (Former Employee) - London, Greater London - 21 June 2022
Enjoyable time at the Co-op with great people. Progression opportunities are there for the right person. Often under staffed. No security present in our store which made staff feel uneasy and also meant we had to deal with a lot of situations with shoplifters. Like a lot of retail jobs - good if you are a colleague but not worth it being a manager.

Bad management
Customer Assistant (Former Employee) - London, Greater London - 21 June 2022
Management would change my shifts mid shift, eg would send me home an hour in and tell me to come back two hours later, it was really annoying but other than that it was ok

Class1 Store Delivery
HGV Class 1 Driver (Former Employee) - Avonmouth, Bristol - 19 June 2022
Busy, multi drops sometimes tight and have to deal with very loaded cages. However if you get on with it and got a ability at all. Money is good and the work regular.
Pros
Left alone on the road.
Cons
Units are old and manuals. Moaned at for mpg monitoring.
