Disorganised and full of uncertainties with constant changes and restructures
Risk Management (Former Employee) - Truro, Cornwall - 5 December 2022
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedFull of uncertainties. Many restructures and constant changes which makes you feel unsettled as to whether you will still have a job at the end of the year. A certain amount of disorganisation along with not being able to get the job done because you have to jump through so many hoops to get work signed off by different departments, very disorganised and not thought out. On the flip side good flexible working though and life / work balance and good pension and holiday allowance.
Pros
Flexible working
Cons
Low pay

Not Good to work for
Teaching Assistant (Former Employee) - United Kingdom - 26 September 2022
Overworked, unrealistic expectations from employer. Management very punitive and dictate. No understanding of work pressures If your face fits all well and good if not you don't stand a chance when employed by them

Constant restructures, under funded and poor planning and people management
Performance Officer (Former Employee) - Truro, Cornwall - 26 July 2022
Cornwall Council is going through a big reorganisation and many staff have been cut. There are constant restructures (I went through about 5 in 12 years) and managers do not reprioritise workload effectively. As a result morale is low and staff are struggling to manage the workload. Despite this there are some amazing people working there that care about making a difference. Flexible time is good but pay has not kept up with the private sector. Cornwall Council should do more to value their staff.
Pros
Flexi time
Cons
Restructures and redundancies

The managers in the Procurement Team were abysmal
Procurement Specialist (Former Employee) - Truro - 2 March 2022
The managers in the Procurement Team were abysmal, not professionally qualified or experienced, they were unable to carry out procurement processes and delegated all their work to their staff . Interview processes not carried out in a fair manner, opportunities for promotion poor as nepotism rife. Other teams may be better run
Pros
Flexitime available
Cons
Avoid working for the Procurement Team it will suck you dry

Flexible working great . but stressful
Administrator (Former Employee) - Truro, Cornwall - 6 February 2022
Colleagues are nice but appalling process for getting any work approved and signed off - takes up to a year in some instances. Not good for morale if you like to get a job completed . Very stressful pressurised environment. You are allocated work duties then they pile more and more until and you end up covering 4 other peoples roles when they leave . impossible to get work completed in contracted hours

Flexible but a bit slow
Administrator (Former Employee) - Truro, Cornwall - 1 February 2022
Big organisation and so sometimes it can take a little while for things to get done. The department I worked in was inefficient and often there was not much to do. Aside from this the flexi-time offered a great balance.

Underpaid and overworked
Civil Enforcement Officer (Former Employee) - Cornwall - 18 July 2021
Managers who have flexi seem to abuse this luxury and are shy to work after 3pm. My colleagues are all wonderful but underpaid. The wage bracket between us and ‘them’ (management) isn’t right or fair considering how little they do! (Work shy and lazy)
Pros
Good pension and job security
Cons
Wage and work shy managerment

Steps
Support Worker (Former Employee) - St. Austell - 22 May 2021
Good job in general but management very two faced Also lack of support and seems you do one little mistake you get hung out to dry they push people who use the service our very fast all due to costs ! They try and limit where you work so that they don’t have to pay fuel as much they like to deduct 6 miles a day so you don’t get that money any over time gets taken off ur next shift so if ur doing split they take it off ur hours so they don’t have to pay the extra the team leaders are hypocritical they tell you somthing but can’t do it them selfs ! They couldn’t care and I had issues due to being a male worker!
Pros
Paid mileage

A place where people do not matter at all, it's about personal gain
Social Worker (Former Employee) - Camborne, Cornwall - 22 September 2020
There is a low support and highly critical culture. Staff are expected to work well beyond allocated hours, there is little recognition of contribution made and management are focused upon their own advancement. A cut-throat environment, where ethics have been lost.
Pros
None
Cons
Long hours, high pressure, high criticism, low support

Good place to work
Financial Administrator (Former Employee) - Truro, Cornwall - 22 September 2020
Despite being in the Public Sector this is a very good place to work. Training and support is excellent. Even as a contractor. Communication is clear, concise and widely distributed.
Employees are respected and although the pay is low, the benefits of the work life balance is emphasized. Flexible hours are normal and followed by everyone as is working from hohomeiwidely used even before the COVID-19 issues ore the COVID-19 issues
Pros
Good work life balance and working environment
Cons
Low pay

They want more and more
Customer Service Advisor (Former Employee) - Camborne, Cornwall - 5 June 2020
Working in the contact centre had its ups and downs. The team were fairly friendly but god forbid you did not agree with one of them.
You have a good work/life balance as the hours are Monday-Friday. You had good leave (if you were ever allowed to take it) and good sick pay. Job security was very good as the calls would always be queued at about 40 waiting. The highest I ever saw it was 72 callers waiting with over an hour wait time as the manager on duty did not know how to cap the calls. Laughable.
The job is relentless. You are answering calls 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. As there is such a high turn over of staff we were almost always understaffed which meant the workload was extremely unmanageable.
There are five managers. One is the designated duty manager each day and you can only ask that specific manager for help. If you approached a different manager they would make it very clear you are not to ask them as they are not on duty. 3 out of 5 managers were not confident in helping as they did not have sufficient training for revenues. This would lead them to question your suggestions and make you feel like you had done something wrong. It was very confusing at times as different managers would advise to do different things. We were actively told not to suggest a managers call back to angry or upset customers, instead we were told to deal with it ourselves. In doing so, we would then get pulled on the bad call.
We hardly ever had team meetings and the employees concerns were never listened to. There are very slack procedures in place for any abusive callers. -

About what you would expect
Transponster (Current Employee) - New County Hall - 3 June 2020
There are many aspects to the question of what are my opinions of Cornwall Council as an employer. It is indeed a very good question to ask that requires some thought to answer.
