Very large organisation split into "functions" such as Project Management, Project Controls, Engineering, Commercial, Finance, Business Management etc.Culture - Part of the civil service and therefore the culture is quite different to the private sector.

Pros

Job security is high, benefits packagae is fairly good, good training/development opportunities

Cons

Pay is not competitive against wider civil service since transformation

Productive and Developmental Workplace

Set on ensuring the highest output of an individual so that they can achieve their highest potential. Very keen to develop you as an individual by making you aware of every possible learning opportunity and providing you with the chance to experience the wider day to day activities within the Ministry of Defence.

Pros

1st hand contact with the dockyard.

Cons

Can be very isolating from the rest of the yard, depending on where you are based

Brilliant technical projects!

As a graduate I was lucky to work on a range of projects from small valve replacements to aircraft carriers. The workplace was very relaxed and supportive and were keen to develop young engineers.

Great place to work

DE&S is a great place to work as long as you show the willingness to progress in your career. Became an arm's length organisation of the Ministry of Defence due to it's recent transformation and change in working culture. Employees are more expected to adopt DE&S ways behaviour and a positive attitude towards the organisation's ethos. It is a mandatory to have a mentor and you are regular assess on your performance and behaviour which means performance appraisal becoming more bureaucratic and you are required to gather evidences such as a thank you or well done to show how performing you have been throughout the year. Promotion can be slow though as you will have to compete with other colleagues for a higher post.

Pros

Flexi time, on-site wifi, work from home, decent salary and pension

Cons

Performance appraisal bureaucratic, promotion to next level lengthy, management can be a pain.

Not a shabby place to be

Although the management structure seems to be 'on-the-fly' of late, it isn't too bad an environment to work in. Warning though....not a place for slackers. The way the structure and advancement works now, it is not the secure job everyone once thought it was and if you're not wanting to push yourself for the better, you will be subject to the system making or breaking you. In short - if you want it, it is possible for both monetary and position advancement....if you don't want it you will be pushed out of the way by others and possibly pay the price for your decisions.

Pros

Wifi and a good culture of relaxing with your team after work

Cons

Can be expected to work very long hours

Enjoyable and productive working environment

The organisation is very much customer focused and strives to promote continuous improvement. The working environment has provided a rich and fulfilling career which is now coming to an end. The staff and colleagues are first rate and very supportive in ensuring the organisational goals are met. The most enjoyable part of the job is the difference you make to customers seeking guidance, clarity and ultimately a solution to move forward in their evolution.

Constant change, low morale

the only way to get promotion is to tread on others, and to take credit for other peoples efforts in the "competency" based interviews. I have had managers who cannot "manage" for toffee, and yet who stride around as if they are sent from heaven, and above everyone else. It's a joke!
