Work-life balance

Courier Van Driver in Bathgate, West Lothian
on 10 May 2018
No work / life balance
Own van required as rental of van dilutes your earnings heavily requiring you to be on call 24/7 in order to earn enough money to feel the job is worthwhile but this then means you have no life outside the job. Too many city centre local jobs that are a waste of fuel & earn no money from them so are a waste of time. Get the longer distance jobs when 1st join that are the bigger earners but these are to keep you happy at 1st then they start to dwindle down. So in hindsight, if you have your own van & are happy to work longer hours / be on call 24/7 then this job would suit you. But if not I woul stay away.

you earn less than minimum wage
I havent got a good word to say about Eagle couriers during my few weeks i worked there. At the interview i was lied too about rates of pay which i didnt find out about until i received my first wages breakdown , promises of over a £1000 a week is farcical .When your needed communication is modest at best , when there not busy and your not needed you will be ignored for hours on end. They want you to commit to out of hours but dont give you a standby rate just an increased rate which is terrible. You will be running about Edinburgh city centre collecting overnight packages and dropping them off at there Edinburgh base for £1.70 , you cant even make the min wage doing this , i worked my behind off for a full day doing this and made in the region of £30 , i used £30 in diesel alone.A clique culture where some drivers get the best runs and the new self employed drivers get the rubbish .If your happy to be treated like rubbish , earn less than the minimum wage , get no break and have no life due to on call and long hours then this is the place to go.

Fast and fun
I enjoyed my time at eagle as work there twice in between my own profession. They run a professional business dealing with a number of large companies so if you like out and about it’s a great job.

Avoid. Back stabbers. Liars.
Patter you up the first few days, maybe a long distance Warner but that soon ends to minimum peanuts letters or bloods via hospital to hospital all day long. 4pm to 6pm they send you anywhere in Scotland at no warning preparation. You're NOT your own boss as you're told what to do like it or lump it and often forced pressured. No matter what a custom wants they get even though a driver has to do difficulties they wont back the drivers up. Never an early finish as all contracted work last thing at night anywhere your sent. You're constantly tracked by guys sat in office unaware traffic obstacles at peak times you're expected to use a helicopter for 3 or 4 destinations over the Central belt at one time. Majority of work NHS so its envelope/daily contracted jobs that don't pay. You could be at the QEUH 20 times a day with no route planned by control all jobs come on like a Taxi with no order other than contract boring bloods from Doctors to Laboratory all day long or appointment letters. No fixed wage or earnings. They send you home at quite spells. The employed drivers get bulk of work to avoid paying self employed drivers so some days you're out for nothing. The management class you as a number you are not appreciated or in any dispute will they listen to a drivers explanation. You don't have a say what work your doing even though you're role states self employed owners.
