Yes they do carry background checks but if you have criminal record is a big NO.

I passed a recent AD and have been waiting for a training date for my preferred base. I have just been told there are no more training dates this year and Easyjet will be in touch the end of the year.Is this usual practice and will I still be contacted when they say?

This is not normal, but due to the covid-19 pandemic recruitment is on hold. They will be in touch as they say towards the end of the year probably to book you in for training beginning of next year.
