Fun job but only if you don't need wages to live off

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Enjoyable place to work, can be fun, can be busy, can be quiet, no two days are the same. The quoted salary on this job is false. You will ever earn 21 pounds an hour in a million years.

Pros

Uniform provided, fun when things are running ok

Cons

Working outside in all weathers

A Disgusting Job.

Working for English Heritage is to do yourself down. The Salary is abysmal and there is no scope for advancement. The Bosses are unscrupulous and do not care about the Law and treating Staff lawfully. Do yourself a favour and apply for a proper job and not English Heritage. The hours are erratic and they try and keep you on a Zero Hour Contract. Avoid at all costs.

Pros

Beautiful surroundings.

Cons

Disgusting Treatment.

It’s ok

Poor management, also is not a permanent job, you will only work full time through April - October. Hours aren’t always given fairly. Always understaffed so you have to work 10x harder than you should. Perks - free lunches, good working team.

Dover Castle

worked for English heritage at Dover castle for 2 years. seasonal contracts. no full time hours available. 0 hour contracts in winter a crucial time for survival. cant live off the wages. however the castle itself and the tunnels are exceptional. management ie very much us and them. no progression opportunities. this job would suit someone at the end of their career looking to reduce their working hours but for someone who wants to sustain a mortgage or raise a family it is not suitable.

Great people. Terrible pay.

Very team based and you meet interesting people (staff and visitors). Progression if you're keen. Pay is minimum and costs are cut wherever possible. Holiday hard to get.

Horrendous beyond belief. Run !!!!

If your chief desires when looking for a job are to be belittled for what you’re great at, gossiped about constantly, pressured into selling membership until your ears bleed then yeah,...English Heritage is for you! Do you have an interest in conservation of our historic sites, their history and giving lovely customers a wonderful day out? Yes? - well that’s a shame because English Heritage have completely forgotten that this is supposed to be their core reason for being. They are a monstrously greedy box ticking corporation, strike rates and spend per heads are their only loves. You will not be. If you have a legitimate complaint, the old retainers or head staff will pack animal together and turn on you. You will not win. The sites are beautiful, some of the other staff are lovely, but they usually don’t stand up for themselves as they fear for their jobs in today’s market & in their rural locale. In summary, do apply of course if you’d like to work for a company whose main attributes are thus: Gossipy nastiness Unreasonable expectations Poor pay One wage to do 7 jobs No praise Constant pressure Corporate greed Dislike of people, especially customers

Pros

The countryside, nice customers.

Cons

Absolutely everything.

Awful company to work for

Long hours, low pay and absolutely horrible customers. The company does not want employees it wants robots. You will be forced to adopt a customer service approach that does not work and angers customers. If you try to use your own initiative in any way you will be reprimanded. Senior and middle managers do not spend any time working in front line roles (and most never have) but will demand you do your job in a manner that is inefficient, impractical, yields poor results and enrages your customers. Just 30 seconds observation of front of house staff would allow them to see that their ideas do not work. Any attempt to raise any issues always falls on deaf ears. Staff are expected to meet ever increasing performance targets trying to sell a rapidly declining product. Many of their places are in embarrassingly bad condition but you are expected to squeeze every possible penny out of customers who more often than not feel ripped off. Staff facilities are basically non existent, nowhere safe to keep coats and bags, toilets in damp, mouldy cupboards full of foliage and insects. The customer more often than not act like absolute animals but the company refuses to give staff resources or take any action to crack down on anti-social behaviour even when it threatens staff and public safety. If you are actually good at your job and surpass your targets managers will do everything in their power to ensure you never get any career progression whatsoever. They want to keep you where you are making money for them. There is very much a clique culture that sees only those -

Pros

Absolutely none

Average, but somewhat unprofessional

Long hours, a slightly above average pay and friendly colleagues are all some of the pros that come with working at the Stonehenge Visitor Centre. However, should you run into a problem with another collegue, or in most cases one of your higher-up collegues, there is not a easy to use, annonymous or professional way, or any way at all to report your issue and see it being dealt with. Supervisors and Managers are almost all biased and treat full-time staff differently to part time staff and never listen to your issues.

Pros

Free Lunch

Cons

Highly Demanding and Unfair Work

Wonderful team, property management and environment.

Great team and management of my particular property. Team and Environment. Very flexible about hours. Loads of training. Cons: Company moving to a corporate model of management - losing ethos nationally. Seasonal Pay and low promised hours.

A good, well-respected organisation to work for with a worthy purpose. It is a good feeling to know that I am helping to preserve England's historic sites for future generations.

Pros

Working for a good cause

Fun workplace

Typically the environment is very friendly. However, the job can be very hard work, stressful and exhausting after a full day. The salary is low, although typical of the hospitality sector.

Pros

Free Lunches

Cons

Physically exhausting

Horrible, impersonal and fake

I applyed and accepted the job for english heritage having a passion for history and people. I was a fool, its just another business sucking all the interesting things from thier sites in exchange for money. All importance goes on maintaining the shop stock and keeping conversation with customers to a sales pitch. I applied for a historic property steward role to one day end up washing up dishes in the back of the cafe area and my supervisor telling me to mention it on my hours so i could be paid less! Horrible long days and company will forget to give you any benefits unless you remind them to give them to you about 3 times. Would not work for them again.

A friendly place to work with lots of opportunity to train, flexible hours with the option of home working on occasion. You can learn from your colleagues who are always willing to share new information and new ways of working.

Pros

Free membership, flexible working
