Working in a smaller library is quite nice as i get to be more involved in the community. I am constantly busy but it is not so bad as the team i am in are great.

Jobs at Essex County Council
Some great colleagues, but management do not support you
Customer Advisor (Former Employee) - Chelmsford, Essex - 13 September 2023
ECC has some great staff but some managers are not supportive at all. Work can feel muddled at time due to poor technology and a reluctant management to embrace change

Can be fun place to work
Customer Service Advisor (Former Employee) - Colchester, Essex - 26 August 2023
Typical day would start at 8.30 - 16.30. Answering calls on various subjects. No 2 days the same. Management very supportive, a good atmosphere to work in

Friendly teams, but stressful work
Social Worker (Current Employee) - Essex - 25 August 2023
Being a social worker at Essex Council is mostly like being a social worker anywhere else- stressful and tiring. But the council itself are great employers, and the teams within adult social care are friendly and helpful. You also get a few employee discounts, like 10% off your gym membership at Riverside. My experience with Essex Council has mostly been positive, but I can't say that the job itself has differed greatly from my other positions with other local authorities.

Supportive colleagues, poor management
Enquiry Officer (Former Employee) - Brentwood, Essex - 15 May 2023
I very much enjoyed working with my colleagues but found management here at best incompetent and at worst micromanaging bullies. No real support for people with mental health issues beyond rote replies.

Decent salary and holiday allowance
Analyst (Current Employee) - Essex - 7 May 2023
Able to work fully remote and people are friendly but there is no real room for development and tends to be a very bureaucratic environment with resistance to change

Zero Career Progression and Culture of Bullying
Caseworker (Former Employee) - Chelmsford - 3 May 2023
I worked in the legal department. Work life balance is nice in the sense that you can work from home, however teams are so understaffed that you’ll be doing the work of two people and so you’ll work late. Zero chances of career progression or salary increase. Therefore there is no motivation to go above and beyond. Just do your job and go home. If management decides that they don’t like you, your career is over. It is the most toxic environment I have ever worked in. Zero collective responsibility, everyone wants to blame someone else for things that have gone wrong. Wasting public money left right and centre. The managers have zero management training and are full on bullies. I have never worked anywhere so toxic. All of the managers are complete robots who don’t care about anyone but themselves. Don’t bother.
Pros
Working from home
Cons
Everything else

Bsa
Business Support Assistant (Current Employee) - Hybrid - 27 April 2023
It is a very welcoming company, there is a lot of support & I have learnt a lot whilst working here. I do highly recommend ECC. You are very independent in your role, as in you are given your work and it is your job to time manage & that works great. You can also start at either 8.30 or 9am and they work very flexibly around my hospital appointments. Diversity is very clearly important to ECC which is great! They care for my disabilities & have aided me in anyway possible
Pros
Flexible hours, hybrid working, pay, benefits, not on your case 24/7
Cons
Starting on a fixed term contract & don’t often offer those

No job prospects
Young carers keyworker (Former Employee) - Essex - 20 April 2023
There was hardly any progression available and pay was incredibly low compared to similar roles in other company’s. Management didn’t take any complaints seriously and were hard to approach. Good pension though
Pros
Pension
Cons
Managers, staff retention, pay

Non Loyal Workplace
Finance Systems Admin Support Officer (Current Employee) - Chelmsford, Essex - 5 April 2023
Doesn’t care about the progression of their employees. Base interviews solely on points taking out any humanity aspect. No culture, and low team morale

Challenging, varied work within a well run HR team.
Recruitment Consultant (Current Employee) - Chelmsford, Essex - 8 March 2023
Challenging, varied work within a well run HR function. Opinions are valued and you are able to work on your own accord without being micromanaged. Management are very supportive with plenty of opportunity to progress.
Pros
Good benefits, Local Government Pension Scheme, Generous holiday with opportunity to purchase more
Cons
Dated offices

Flexible yet secure role
Music Tutor (Current Employee) - Peripatetic - 19 September 2022
As a music tutor you are able to control your hours and at which schools across the county, with an excellent hourly rate. Despite the excellent hourly rate, hours are limited to 30 weeks per year monday to friday so there is a limit on the salary you can accumulate. Contracts however are permanent, with sick pay and pension being very reasonable. I highly recommend working for Essex Music Service.

Wide range of cultures depending where you work in ECC
Personal Assistant (Former Employee) - Chelmsford, Essex - 7 July 2022
Hybrid working available where role permits. Could be more joined up across functions. Lots of hubs to work from. Lots of contractor opportunities. ..

Tutor at ACL- Confusing administration tasks, poor IT
Tutor (Current Employee) - Various - 9 June 2022
Enjoyable work is marred by confusing admin. Print availability is poor, wifi poor in classrooms. Too much is remote. Have only met my manager twice in 10 months.

Stressful work enviroment with limited support
Social Worker (Former Employee) - Essex - 19 April 2022
I would not reccomend working for ECC unless you like tick box exercises with no positive outcome. Senior management could benefit by involving employees in decesion making.
