The job I performed was not that inspiring, but I was very much aware of the talent of the permanent staff I was working with. Most of them managed to wear their talent lightly.

Talented colleagues

Opportunistic bullying is rife within the organization. Individual attention to detail is ignored in favor of corporate ignorance & lack of attention to mission values & end result. Not a good life style or work balance, expect to experience family issues, alcoholism, divorce & a complex destructive lifestyle
Pros
Institions former capabilities & kudos
Cons
Non motivated freestyle bureaucracy

Hard working but friendly culture. Was involved with both Agile and PRINCE2 run projects. Lots of opportunity to get involved with a wide variety of different projects and work with cross-organisational teams as well as external providers.

Challenging and potentialy impactful working on implementation of UK foreign policy. Opportunity to learn languages, build great cross-cultural relationships, travel and have unique experiences. May not leave you with skils to qualify you for private sector roles. Not well paid in the UK but decent packages are available overseas.

A Nice friendly atmosphere where everyone is working towards the same goal, working for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. The workplace is similar to other government departments.

Ample opportunities for development and career progress if start working FCO in young age ...going through ranks but not the best place for mid level career enteries ...it takes time to progress and sometimes so slow one may need to change path after all. Extremtly intelligent, ambitious environment with highly capable and talented resources ...in right teams you go up and progress so well. In wrong teams ...it is boring at the very best.
Pros
Ample opportunities for development but not quickly enough to transition
Cons
Very low paid - as most civil service bodies are.

Busy site in 65 acres, fulfilling security needs to the client, various job roles, can be demanding at times, simple shift pattern, 4 on 4 off, or days only.
Pros
Out in the countryside
Cons
Location, requires own transport

Good career opportunities if that is what you want. More aimed at young single men and women, work/life balance is an issue and rarely receive any praise for going above and beyond.

Great place to work in a grandeur of a building with lots of great history. A great bunch of people in the team but decision making could have been better.

working in a place with very high government official is a surreal experience. There are Many aspects to this role that allow you to challenge yourself and benefit from the different avenues it allows you to explore. A very relaxed yet busy environment, and constant excitement in the air. Many exciting events also took place within the 3 FCO buildings, which were usually high profile and that bought a sense of joy itself, to be a part of something so big. overall a very pleasant working place and very friendly staff in general.
Pros
Working alongside the backbone of the country
Cons
very long hours.

I would recomemend working with the FCO. They have the interest of the U.K. at the forefront of their operations. Their work is interesting and challanging.

The 'red tape' that was around every process caused the delay in a lot of areas within the company. As a contractor this was actually a good thing from a selfish point of view, but as a taxpayer this was a bad example of resource use etc.
