Great culture, horrible senior leadership

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
The people are Groupon are amazing. People who have left Groupon regularly stay in touch, and it's a great environment for learning, having a great team, and strong direct management. However, senior leadership in the last 5 years was terrible (w/ CEO most recently getting fired) that led to little transparency, poor decision making, and a result loads of layoffs due to declining revenues.

I left only because they went in consultation

Groupon was an amazing company to work for, they had some organization issue on a management level but if they would have gone into consultation I would still work for them.

No progression

Do not work here. A stressful place to work with terrible management and no progression. The most enjoyable part of the day is going home. The hardest part of the job is working with unsupportive management.

Poor Management

I found the management at Groupon very poor. A lot of blame culture with not much support. Sometimes staff felt bullied and there was a lot of negative energy in the office. This lead to Groupon loosing a lot of good talent which is a real shame as the company has so much potential.

Not a great place to work for

Company is devided in 4 lines of business (goods, Local, National and Travel). It can be a very different picture between each department, each team and who is your manager. Unfortunately the company only listens to managers and staff have no input when it comes to feedback besides a stupid survey that gets sent once a month. No opportunity to grow, or move between departments as its all in your Line Manager hands to make your life hard if they want to. Or you could be lucky to work from the 1st day in the right team/department, then it could be a good place to be in. Very few managers are actually good and they care about their staff. Company should invest a lot more in a work culture, educate managers that they need to promote their staff and allow them to move to other departments freely so you don't lose out on Talent. Groupon Lacks in: Communication, resources, training, mentoring and proper feedback system EQUALLY between managers and staff.

Pros

Great employees all across

Cons

Management and limited opportunities

Strange Culture

Tough job but with resilience and consistency, you'll do well. Opportunity to learn a lot and develop personal skills. Management however is questionable and other employees can tend to be very childish.

Pros

free breakfast, coffee machine, breakout areas, sociable hours

Cons

management

An honest review

Every day is the same at Groupon. If you're from a traditional retail background, working here won't help you and you will find it hard to adjust. They say they want you to plan in advance like a normal retailer, but you will find yourself firefighting constantly to find deals to go live, often within the same week of finding them. Management don't really care about you or your progression, they just want to see numbers. The people however, are great.

Pros

location, commission structure

Cons

management, no set path for progression

Nice people, bad leadership.

A young company plagued with issues, bad business moves and poor leadership. You see a companies true colours when a restructuring process starts. This is when the poor organisational, structure and lack of support comes into play. Met some lovely people but it is not a safe place to work but good to make a quick buck in the sales teams.

Pros

good people

Cons

bad leadership

A typical day at work

The company's structure is different in comparison to working in a formal professional setting. A lot of work needs to be done at Groupon from the top to bottom as there is a lack of professionalism across the board (from Senior management to junior employees)

Pros

Free fruits any other day

Cons

Long hours (9am - 6pm)

Fun work place, but not a place for a career

You have to be totally self motivated here. There is no team, mangers support, help from anyone, very little and poor communication. It's dog eat dog and it's either sink or swim. No formal structure or career advancement. There is a laid back nice working atmosphere but that is more down to the people that work here. Rules are constantly changed and never in the favor of the staff.

Pros

good people, let you get on with what you wnat to do

Cons

No progression, help and support, constant changing of rules poorly communicated

***AVOID *** No support, poor management & unreasonable expectations

Poor training Appalling leads Frustrating CRM system Unreasonable expectation Goalpost changed 99% new business Accounts taken away after 3 months so loss of commission to Telesales in London Greedy deals structures Poor business analysts No support from managers Humiliation at sales meetings Difficult to claim expenses - fuel/parking Frustrating contract process Do not care about employees (only profits) Long hours (8am morning calls and 6pm) - no work life balance Lack of area knowledge - not everywhere is LONDON! Favouritism over account division No set territory Constantly having to get deals changed because of poor editorial copy and pictures Customers have delayed payments due to finance issues and adding bank details (must provide IBAN & BIC numbers not sort code and account numbers) Arrogant staff in London who claim to be there as business support and analysts Remote working so can feel isolated or the flip side, being constantly hounded by the Regional MD Change targets by number of deals, revenue, contracts signed - all on a whim Bonus potential isn't as high as they make out HUGE turnover of staff due to constant pressure and unhappy Complaints from clients who have had previous bad experience Try signing deals where you need a minimum 50% off the original value then explaining that Groupon want 40% of the revenue from vouchers - be prepared to be insulted and carefully consider if this is for you!

Pros

Ok basic

Cons

Long hours, humiliation, poor management

The best people on earth!

Groupon has fostered a young, vibrant environment by employing talented graduates from all walks of life. However, the growth of the business in other corners of the world is beginning to take effect on the creativity and innovation of the UK branch. A typical day consists of coming in, looking at the schedule for the next few days and prioritising workload accordingly. The department is broken down into unique sections who perform a specialised job role. As a result, the department is extremely efficient, but the work can become highly repetitive. This is the most challenging part of the job, but it has taught me to remain positive and find other ways to garner variety. Not only this, but I have learnt a great deal about how to motivate others through repetitive tasks and how to create incentives organically. The most enjoyable part of the job has been learning to work with a variety of individuals and familiarise myself with the complexities of people management. In my current position I have been given a great deal of freedom to develop my role and shape my own responsibilities. This is a testament to the trusting relationship I have with management. However, support has always been there should I need it.

Pros

Environment, colleagues, line management

Cons

Long hours, salary inconsistencies, lack of organisation from senior management

They treat people appallingly

In my experience, this company really doesnt care about its employees. No management to those working in the field, no answer when you try to contact head office for help, and you are totally disposable. When the job is going well, its great......when its not, youre out. Simple as that. No second chances, no offer of help, no anything. Its a constant battle with head office to get leniency in deal structure, and it seems to always be a case of 'one rule for one, one for another'. The training does not in any way prepare you for the role either. Its a very tough job made more difficult by the lack of help, and 5 days condensed training does not prepare you for it. I had no clue how to do a contract for ages, which is a very important part of the job! Did I mention you are disposable? You are not a valued team member. Even if you've brought in a whole lot of new clients!! The best part of the job was the colleagues.

Pros

good bonus structure, good basic wage

Cons

isolated, no job security, no career progression, constant unease, unfairness, favouritism, too little training, no help when its obvious you need it

A Good Starting Point

Typical day: edit copy and write a few pieces. Usually hold/participate in meetings concerning copy style, brand KPIs and weekly objectives. What I've Learned: how to thrive, succeed and develop my skills in a fast-paced, high-demand international business.Management: strives to combine seniority with friendliness.Co-workers: experienced professionals with a fun outlook.Hardest part of the job: the repetition and low glass ceilingMost enjoyable part: the camaraderie
