Good workplace, unpleasant job

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
The company itself was good, and held lots of events for staff, offered nice benefits. Workplace atmosphere and colleagues were laid-back and helpful but the job itself was difficult. Training was extensive and enjoyable but queues are almost always hours long so you are met with frustrated customers almost constantly. I felt that agents should be paid more.

Great place to work!

This was my first proper job which i stayed in for around 2 years, staff were lovely and managers were great- however when it came to transferring stores they were a little slow when it came to helping. As my transfer got muddled up and never happened leaving me in the dirt. Other than that i highly recommend!

mixed emotions

I worked here for a year and I will say there were some excellent managers but it was overshadowed by the horrible ones who were power obsessed and massive micro-managers constantly keeping on an eye on your every move including through the cameras, lack of understanding when you're sick, pay is minimum wage you can get better elsewhere.

Poor management

Management it very cliquey and don't pay much attention to staff in friendliness aspect. Very pushy on membership signups with no incentives. Good with flexibility but pay is low.

Good job but unfair pay

Good place to work and the managers are very supportive and understanding. The only down side is if you are under the age of 21 you get paid less than your work colleagues for doing the same job. Apart from this, there are plenty of opportunities for advancement.

Cons

Bad pay

Fun to work there

One of my favourite jobs, only got to work there for 2 months as the store then closed down. Had a lot of fun with the team, they made me feel really comfortable and like i fit in. i enjoyed the actual work aswell as i love fashion. They cared about there staff, had lots of snacks in the staffroom, management was relaxed as the store was closing down. But we still got on with the work.

Pros

free snacks, nice varied shift patterns.

Cons

none i loved if

Stressful

Customer Interactions: Dealing with a wide range of customers, including those who may be difficult or demanding, can be challenging.Fast-Paced Environment: Retail often involves fast-paced work, especially during busy periods like sales or holidays, which can be stressful.Inventory Management: Ensuring that the store is well-stocked and organized can be a demanding task, particularly during restocking or inventory audits.

Each day is different

Each day is different and there is always something to do. It is good if you are looking for your first job. It was really fun but It was hard to get more hours.

Not a bad first job, but not great place to stay

It can be a great work place if your store manager is good, fair and friendly (which mine was luckily) and colleagues are friendly and sociable but with the volume of team leaders and department managers it can really quickly become quite a toxic work environment with people getting big egos over their authoritative roles and shipping off shop floor jobs to younger staff whilst they go off and constantly do ‘admin office stuff’ - the pay is inexcusable for a company racking in such a high amount of profits daily with their constant amount of never ending new stock. (A thin polyester t-shirt costs more than the hourly pay) overall, you are a number to this company and you can find a job you are better valued at instead.

Pros

Can be flexible

Cons

Everything above

Poor management and not worth the salary

A typical day included poor management where they would never be seen helping on the shop floor, and stressing over a lack of training when facing customers. On several occasions I was left alone on the till during their breaks, and floor managers were rarely seen on the shop floor when they were in. Team leaders did most of the heavy lifting when it came to management. Although there were occasions where one would suddenly announce, without negotiation, that they were going to help in the stock room, leaving the newer, inexperienced staff on the shop floor alone to deal with the Saturday lunchtime rush. One of the managers took 3 weeks to sign a holiday form even though he had approved everyone else's, and tried to convince me I never handed it in at all! Additionally, if one is ill a mere short time before their shift starts, you are subjected to an 'unauthorised absence', so if you unexpectedly vomit before a shift you are punished for it and given a harsh reminder of this rule. Additionally, poor management resulted in me not being till trained until 6 weeks into the job, at least.

Pros

Hour lunch break

Cons

Short training, poor salary, poor management

Nice staff bad managers

Lots to do each day. Staff are mostly friendly. Lots of gossip which makes you not know who to talk to. I like working on different floors and my day goes quickly. Some managers are more kind than others and some you have to know what mood they’re in before approaching. Good discount and hours are ok

Stressful and Unorganised Workplace

Most of the time I am put on a shift on my own, where there is little to no help available to me and I am often left to struggle on my own. This job has taught me that I need to stop letting people use me, as managers often use me for the worst shifts because no one else will do them, and they know I won't say no. Managers don't rotate shifts much, often giving you a couple of weeks notice before weeks, when it should be 4-5 weeks. They are heavy on favouritism, and often have the same staff members working weekends, instead of making it fair for everyone. They hardly listen to your needs and requirements if you do not have children, or other care needs.

Pros

Employee Discount

Cons

Unfair treatment of staff

nice work environment

it’s a good environment to work in, everyone is friendly, they are just a bit stingey giving out holidays and there is never any over time available which can be annoying

Vibes depend on the store

I’m currently employed at a H&M kids store, but I often do overtime in the adult H&M store nearby too. I’ve found the H&M kids store team I work with are absolutely incredible, we all get along and it feels like a family. Everyone is helpful and encouraging and genuinely wants everyone else to succeed, whereas the other store I have worked for does not have that same feel to it. I think it potentially might be because my store is a team of about 20 people, whereas the other store is upwards of 100 employees! A typical day in my store consists of tidying the store (e.g, ensuring all the rails are tidy, the tills are tidy, the fitting rooms are kept empty of hangers and rejected clothes when possible), garment caring (e.g, ensuring all the hangers are correct, the item has been zipped/ buttoned/ folded properly), working the tills (e.g, serving customers, keeping sock bins tidy, completing RFID scanning, organising returned items) and clearing rails of new and old stock (allocation and call off). My store management team is truly amazing - my store manager is always willing to listen and is always doing her best to give you the time off you ask for, if it isn’t possible she explains why and what your other options are; my department manager is truly top tier and someone I genuinely consider a friend. he goes above and beyond to ensure the whole of his department staff are happy and cared for and always is open to staff swapping shifts etc. Our visual merchandiser is also incredible, offering assistance to everyone in the store, even though it isn’t in her job description to -

Pros

Good environment, 25% discount, free online delivery, good amount of holiday allowance

Cons

Shift patterns, unpaid breaks, limited overtime if store is fully staffed, early/ late shifts for delivery depending on the store

Fine for short-term work

Working as a retail assistant at H&M has been an engaging experience. The fast-paced environment allowed me to develop strong multitasking skills and hone my customer service abilities. Collaborating with a diverse team made the job enjoyable, although managing peak hours could be challenging. The employee discount and opportunities for growth within the company added to the overall positive experience.
