Be prepared to be on your own

Indeed featured review

Well, if you get a decent manager you'll find it easier. You have to be completely self sufficient, most of the learning is done on your own that you will figure out by either getting a pricing wrong in an appointment and finding out when you get paid or on the spot with a customer.Advice, the surveyors are your best friend as a design consultant. They are the easiest by far to get technical information from as the Designer question service with the trainers is shockingly slow and most of the time, they'll say you can't do something when you actually can.The relationship with surveyors will be a lot easier to maintain if you make sure you write ALL info on the paperwork for them. It will save you, and pretty much all the time they'll answer the phone if your with a customer and have a question. Show them respect and you'll get it back. There are also a lot of bad designers, paperwork isn't done properly, adding things into the design that Hammonds don't have and then the good designers are asked to fix the bad designers mistakes. Hammonds are actually very simple, fixed sizings, they don't have units that accommodate all rooms and shapes. Be careful of slopes, boilers, pipes, vents; any kind of obstruction. One more thing, be careful when you choose to leave. Only say your leaving on the day you want to leave as they will shut off your laptop program immediately and any outstanding payments you will be waiting MONTHS for. Its not all bad, if you have a good connection with your surveyors and you don't get a grumpy manager you'll be fine. Just be aware it is a very lonely -

Excellent Company

I loved working here and regret leaving. Will go back the first opportunity I get. The management were very supportive and the role was challenging. So many good training days held.

Not a bad place to work

Worked here for over a year. Wasn’t a bad place to work but it was way too relaxed for me. Time went slow and little to no interaction with customers due to the stores location.

Poor Company to work for!

Low pay and expected to work 15 hours a day when it suits the company. The company were just obsessed with profit which resulted in un-happy staff and a low quality product. Poor management from the top who wouldn’t even acknowledge you. Family run business that could of been a really good company to work for but for the time I was there they were not.

Ok in parts

Two systems to learn, one easy that crashes, one all codes, which when you get the gist of it works reasonably well. More information available on this too.Cliquey.Some staff really nice, others awful.Lots of voices other than mine say don't work here.

Productive

The pay is excellent. The management are excellent. Very fair and take complaints very seriously. The health and safety is outstanding. Job and knock.

Don’t waste your time here.

Probably the worst job I have ever had. Nothing like what you are promised. Every job I went on either had bits missing or damaged. So you are then expected to revisit in your own time and put all there mistakes right for free. Plus you are also there delivery driver. Filling your van up with stuff. Then taking it and unloading it all. Plus then doing it again when you find out bits are damaged and missing. I could go on. But basically if you have a trade don’t waste your time here. Way to much hassle. Ok for a diy’er. Or someone just starting out.

Company is toxic & bullying

Hammonds is an aweful place & i strongly reccommend everyone to avoid. Customers & staff are not looked after but more inportantly are manipulated & pushed into bad situations. Theres zero upside to this company.

Cons

Toxic & bullying

Very demanding, poor management structure.

If you have ever watch "The Office" then you can relate to this high pressure sales company, stuck in the 80s, had a recent MBO and are desperate for each sale. They operate a high pressure sales and office environment, high staff turnover of office and install teams. Very poor management structure that like to micro manage every minute of the working day, which is approx a 14 hour day. The computer system the use is from the 1970s and Head office is a series of portacabins with buckets everywhere to catch the rain as the roof constantly leaks, very little investment in the company, staff or training.

Selling in the only thing that matters

Not a happy place, avoid employment rules by making everyone self-employed. Sales team are out of control to detriment of customer satisfaction. Car expenses are not met.

Depressing!

A manager with bullying complaints still running a department with no idea. Office is basically run down and still in the 80’s. Management do not care if you’re good at what you do if you’re doing 2/3 roles at once. Shambles

Not worth the hassle

Not worth the hassle, good day rates, but parts are always missing or damaged. Then have to book in your own time to fit/replace. Good when things go your way!

Pros

Good daily rate

Terrible company to work for.

Worked here for a long time. And really enjoyed it. Even though the wages and the commission are awful. You have to work with old products they don't update their ranges in the showrooms. The people running the show are on another level. Everyone I worked with over the years has left because of them. The regional managers get their minions to to their dirty work for them while they sit back and collect their wages. Truly awful place to work now.

Awful

Awful place to work, everything is against the fitter anything to stop you getting paid. No help from management. Asking questions to management then you get spoken to rudely and like you are an idiot. Surveyors promise heaven and earth to customers then once you arrive to fit the furniture you have to explain why it can’t be done. They squeeze the jobs so you are under pressure to complete, once you can’t they send someone else to complete then charge you for it. If you like long hours and don’t enjoy seeing your family this is the company for you.

Pros

Some nice fitters

Cons

Very long hours Any reason not to pay the fitter Management no good Parts missing 7 out of 10 times

Nice place to work. Great senior leadership team.

Very happy there. Salary could have been higher but SLT were lovely.Work was fast paced but I liked it.Training was good and staff were kind. That made such a difference.

Pros

Hybrid working (even before covid)

Cons

Long hours, average salary

Too much onus on the fitter for things that the fitter has no control over.

The day rate for fitters is good. The problem with working for Hammonds is the fitter must return to complete jobs FOR FREE if there are any damaged or missing parts from the fits which in my experience was more than 50% of fits. No extra money for fuel or time spent collecting the parts and arranging with the client to return when the part is finally manufactured. You do not get full payment until the job is completed so will sometimes be waiting weeks for payments. You also have to collect all materials and deliver them to site yourself which can result in very long days and considerable extra labour loading your van up every morning from the hub driving to site and unloading before you can actually start the job. There is good money to be made but you have to be prepared for long hours 5, 6, 7 days a week.

Pros

High day rate (if no returns are needed to complete a job)

Cons

High rate of returns required to complete jobs due to problems that are not the fitters fault, I.e. damaged panels and or missing parts, wrong colour parts etc all down to the fitter to sort out for free!

Can be very up and down

Some months can be busy and productive with a decent opportunity to earn a reasonable salary, other months you can be left out to dry with little to no opportunity to change that.

Pros

work when you want, no need to be limited to specific hours or days, able to have holiday when you want and as much or as little as possible

Cons

not a sustainable income, hard to break into the area managers inner circle

It looks promising

I work in Hammonds for 2 months. 1 week was paid training in academy . 3 weeks I should do the job with other fitter. To get familiar with all job. In that moment was everything okay and looks pretty promising. 2 fitters jobs going quickly and easy. I meet people who works 1 year and even 6-8years that sounds promising. Payment £220 for a days job arriving to work they pay you 50% finishing job they pay rest of Money. They will told for everyone you not gonna travel mor then 30 miles a way from home. So I start work on my own first job easy finish in 6 hours get paid happy going home. 2nd job a bit bigger 2 days job sorted in 1 day get paid for 2 days happy excited going home and have rest day or if you want ask for intermediate job. In another 2 weeks I had 1 incomplete job, what you can sorted after 2-3 weeks. And from that incomplete job starts adding incomplete jobs we’re quickly. So basically in 1 week I have 2 jobs incomplete 2jobs- 4days get paid £440 jobs not done and I should go back. For rest o the money for 1 of in complete job I lost a day and go back and forward to the customer. Hammounds pay fuel 30p a 1 miles if you go further then 40 miles less then that they will not cover fuel costs. So waiting the parts 2-3week and you have your calendar scheduled so you need Cary on with the jobs. Eventually they start calling asking can you do jobs further then you give post codes and the incomplete jobs start stacking. And on all off this you need do a lot of work. Pick up from nearest point furniture in your van fingers cross if everything will fits if not you should -

Cons

Long hours

Far too many glory seeking people in management "to many chiefs" To many changes at management level -all want to change things for changes sake -"Their idea is going to launch the company to the next level" just like the last change and the one before -and the next one !
