80s high pressure culture

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
If you can sell, and you don't value your soul you can make a good living working for Hammonds. You are not given appointments till the night before so it is imossible to plan unless you book out of the diary a month in advance. It used to be a good company but a recent change in Director means a return to the 80s style of working and it's just a poor version of Sharps now. Turnover of management is high so there is no consistency. They take on too many new designers who are not trained well enough and are not given enough appointments. They fall by the wayside with no care that they will invest a couple of months before realising they won't earn. In the meantime, the existing designers sit around doing nothing waiting for a return to normal when the new ones drop off again. Dealing with customers is heartbreaking as so many of the jobs go wrong because of stupid mistakes and poor quality control. They then have to wait an hour to get through to anyone and struggle to get anyone to dela with their complaint. In the January sales, the trainers get to cherry pick the appointments and although you can earn good money in January, you will deal with more rubbish than usual as the mantra is, 'if it walks, book it'. They will not care that you are out wasting your time driving to 'no sits' and poor quality appointments.

Rewarding, you get what you put in

I work hard for Hammonds, designing rooms with customers in their own homes. I work long hours at times to get a good return but earnings are good. They don't pressurise you to work longer hours and managers and trainers are really supportive. Even mistakes and errors are met with understanding and help to fix, not judgment. There are opportunities to progress. Hammonds is a company who deliver what they promise in my experience.

Pros

Flexible hours, great support, good money

Cons

Work can be quiet at certain times, late nights

Great Ethics Great Product.

No typical days. Meet nice people in their homes. Management are democratic and trust their designers. Hardest part being a lone worker and not being able to see co workers very often.

Pros

Self management

Cons

Isolation

Self Employed Position

Training was very good, two weeks at Head office and very thorough and professional. A typical day would be one evening appointment each day at first while you are just settling in the job. You will usually be given upto 3 appointments on a Saturday and Sunday. If you are a good closer you will be given more appointments as they tend to look after their long established designers and good closers. The management was OK and you are requested to call them after every sales pitch made to keep them in the loop. The hardest part of the job for me was travelling long distance to find that the customer wasn't in or that the house was empty or wouldn't answer the door ? The most enjoyable part of the job was meeting the prospective customers and having made the sale you would be paid about two weeks later.

Pros

Good Training And Freedom To Work When Yu Wanted To

Cons

Long distances at times and turning up to no shows.
