Not worth the hassle

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Not worth the hassle, good day rates, but parts are always missing or damaged. Then have to book in your own time to fit/replace. Good when things go your way!

Pros

Good daily rate

Don’t waste your time here.

Probably the worst job I have ever had. Nothing like what you are promised. Every job I went on either had bits missing or damaged. So you are then expected to revisit in your own time and put all there mistakes right for free. Plus you are also there delivery driver. Filling your van up with stuff. Then taking it and unloading it all. Plus then doing it again when you find out bits are damaged and missing. I could go on. But basically if you have a trade don’t waste your time here. Way to much hassle. Ok for a diy’er. Or someone just starting out.

Awful

Awful place to work, everything is against the fitter anything to stop you getting paid. No help from management. Asking questions to management then you get spoken to rudely and like you are an idiot. Surveyors promise heaven and earth to customers then once you arrive to fit the furniture you have to explain why it can’t be done. They squeeze the jobs so you are under pressure to complete, once you can’t they send someone else to complete then charge you for it. If you like long hours and don’t enjoy seeing your family this is the company for you.

Pros

Some nice fitters

Cons

Very long hours Any reason not to pay the fitter Management no good Parts missing 7 out of 10 times

Too much onus on the fitter for things that the fitter has no control over.

The day rate for fitters is good. The problem with working for Hammonds is the fitter must return to complete jobs FOR FREE if there are any damaged or missing parts from the fits which in my experience was more than 50% of fits. No extra money for fuel or time spent collecting the parts and arranging with the client to return when the part is finally manufactured. You do not get full payment until the job is completed so will sometimes be waiting weeks for payments. You also have to collect all materials and deliver them to site yourself which can result in very long days and considerable extra labour loading your van up every morning from the hub driving to site and unloading before you can actually start the job. There is good money to be made but you have to be prepared for long hours 5, 6, 7 days a week.

Pros

High day rate (if no returns are needed to complete a job)

Cons

High rate of returns required to complete jobs due to problems that are not the fitters fault, I.e. damaged panels and or missing parts, wrong colour parts etc all down to the fitter to sort out for free!

It looks promising

I work in Hammonds for 2 months. 1 week was paid training in academy . 3 weeks I should do the job with other fitter. To get familiar with all job. In that moment was everything okay and looks pretty promising. 2 fitters jobs going quickly and easy. I meet people who works 1 year and even 6-8years that sounds promising. Payment £220 for a days job arriving to work they pay you 50% finishing job they pay rest of Money. They will told for everyone you not gonna travel mor then 30 miles a way from home. So I start work on my own first job easy finish in 6 hours get paid happy going home. 2nd job a bit bigger 2 days job sorted in 1 day get paid for 2 days happy excited going home and have rest day or if you want ask for intermediate job. In another 2 weeks I had 1 incomplete job, what you can sorted after 2-3 weeks. And from that incomplete job starts adding incomplete jobs we’re quickly. So basically in 1 week I have 2 jobs incomplete 2jobs- 4days get paid £440 jobs not done and I should go back. For rest o the money for 1 of in complete job I lost a day and go back and forward to the customer. Hammounds pay fuel 30p a 1 miles if you go further then 40 miles less then that they will not cover fuel costs. So waiting the parts 2-3week and you have your calendar scheduled so you need Cary on with the jobs. Eventually they start calling asking can you do jobs further then you give post codes and the incomplete jobs start stacking. And on all off this you need do a lot of work. Pick up from nearest point furniture in your van fingers cross if everything will fits if not you should -

Cons

Long hours

Bad experience with Hammonds

Poor and rude management . I will not recommend working for this company because they will blame you for their mistakes and take money from your wages and tell their customers that it’s your fault

It’s a farce

If it’s north west area the manager has no thoughts for fitter retention you don’t get paid till job complete and they don’t rush bad experience for a fitter there 1-100 -1

Pros

In the north as a fitter = none

Cons

As a fitter need a bigger space to write this

Very poor

Normally each day is very busy, you can work even seven days a week but salary is in real very poor. I met many people worked for this company roughly only 10 percent was happy of this job. I can not recommend this company.

Management don’t care

Do not work for this company- product is shockingly poor when it is actually delivered which in turn means your job will not be finished so no payment and you will have to return in your own time Terrible!!!!

Management WILL let you down

Hammonds used to be a good company to work for. However they will now have you driving all over the country with no fuel payment. 8 out 10 jobs you fit will fail due to poor packaging/handling of materials or survey issues. This is down to surveyors having little/no product knowledge You will get NO back up from the management team - they are a disgrace. The company no longer has a quality control department, you are expected to inspect parts and report any issues. As a result you will NOT get paid until any issues are rectified. Basically you are expected to fit a premium priced product that is fit for the skip !!

Great job satisfaction can be achieved

To many problems with management not looking after the fitters. Failure to supply correct materials with to many survey errors. Fitters are penalised with pay deductions all to often when it's not their fault . No fuel costs allowed for . Used to be a great company to work for. But now it's hard to make a decent wage and cover expenses as a self employed fitter

Pros

Decent money when it all goes right

Cons

Long days

Not overly great

Good money if everything turns up half the time if not more then half there's something damaged missing and son on. Feels like the while company is just set around the fitter losing out and no one else. E.g something missing - don't get paid un till complete that is at least a week late. Something damaged - paid a week late. Surveyor issue- paid a week late. Customer can be a nightmare, they've obviously paid a lot of money for the wardrobe which leads them too be overly picky even too the point where there not happy that there are any joins at all as it is sold as seamless. If the product has been given a big discount they save money by giving you less time too do it. Recently fitted a room that was 3 times bigger then a room I had a day on and only got 2 days. Work things out on a 1.5 1.8 base but if it comes out that it's a 2.1 - 2.4 they will scale it down too a 1 day so they they don't pay the fitter as much. Overall one of the worst company's for the fitter too be at.

Pros

Pretty good pay

Cons

Everything aet agaist the fitter

Time served avoid

If you are a qualified carpenter and joiner don’t touch these with a barge pole . You will be loading your van on Sunday to have any chance of completing your job in time for your next 10-11 hour days are not unusual. You will not be paid until the job is complete ( you always breathe a sigh of relief due to poor quality control , surveys and deliveries) . The work at times of the year will dry up ,and you will be forced to travel far outside the area agreed. The bedroom being somewhere where people have no distractions your work and the quality of Hammonds products will be scrutinised to the max and any problems( 98% of the time due to the company ) will be assessed by the fitter within the first month of installation. Far less stress and ultimately more money to be earned avoiding this company

Pros

Some lovely customers

Cons

As above

Waste of time

Waste of time if your a carpenter . Every thing is tailored to suit them , you have to store there furniture deliver it and fit it , they don’t care if u can’t park or if in a flat anything over a certain weight is surposed to be delivered by a 2 man delivery team it won’t be u will have to deal with it . Parking permit s are never arranged should be . You will not get full weeks they will expect u to give notice to them on jobs but can cancel all your work for that week they don’t care if leaving u with nothing, always damaged or missing part or surveys messed up u will have to go back to these jobs for the original days money to complete after wAiting for parts they will hold your money till u go back if u can’t get there when they want there send someone else and charge u , if customers acuse you of damage ie marking a wall they will side with them and charge u basically the pitfalls are endless and you will lose money avoid at all costs

Good work if there is any

Everybody gets promised £200 a day,£1000 a week, problem is for john lewis jobs you only get £180 a day, training and pay for training is really good, unfortunatly a serious lack of work in the aberdeen area. Asked to drop my own work at a moments notice to go and replace a door or adjust a unit at £15 a time. Lucky if i recieved 2 jobs in a month at points.. didnt even cover the van payments for the van they require you to get which is needed to carry all the materials

Pros

Good money if jobs are steady

Cons

Dont care that you need to work to live

Busy with high workload

Poor management and unfair policies make this company difficult to work for and earn a decent wage. Long hours and fuel costs only covered after 80 miles per day lowers your take home pay considerably.
