Work-life balance

Sergeant in Various locations
on 30 August 2020
Be realistic
This job has its for and against. Be aware it will change your life and you have to work out how you deal with that. It will give you a mass of life skills educate you in the legal and court system and will improve you giving you major confidence to deal with most things in and out of the job. However It is an extremely dangerous job , that might be obvious but danger can lurk in many corners even doing a risk report on someone it’s a lot of responsibility that if done wrong will bite you. Hampshire are no different to any other force , there’s good supervisors and really rubbish inept over promoted supervisors only promoted by other idiots who shouldn’t be where they are. That unfortunately is life in the police and other organisations. It’s not until you leave you realise that inside the police at least everyone is on the same page in the police, as outside people really don’t understand investigations the victim and, risk etc etc. So in summary would I advise anyone to go into the Police and to Hampshire, yes I would .

Friendly and comfortable workplace
My time in work experience was enjoyable and the officers were extremely friendly and helpful, while being very professional, and extremely proficient at their jobs.
Police Staff Investigator in Basingstoke, Hampshire

Satisfying but I should have had an exit strategy
I was completely new to the legal system, having never been in trouble with the police, and the job I applied for was re-engineered so when I arrived it was a completely different beast. Hampshire Police are a reasonable employer, but have the same issues every service has, sometimes you get good management and staff and sometimes you don't, I was lucky at times and had some of the best line managers (Sergeants) that I've ever had, but equally I had some that I just had to work around because they were not there for the same reason everyone else was. If you want an employer who will give you every opportunity to eat up your personal time and give the minimal thanks for it, but equally if you are driven enough to do that become a warranted officer and see how far to can climb, in my time I have seen new intakes reach detective sergeant level, so if you want to go for the higher ranks it is open for you to try. My experience has been different and the job nearly broke me at times, they try to assist when stress levels get to high but need to stop trying everything to fix people when they break and start looking at the root cause for so many people struggling.

Poor Leadership
Not really what the job description said, poor leadership and over supervision. Poor personal development opportunities and a bureaucratic rank oriented organisational culture

Interview questions

Examples of types of behaviour or skills relevant to the job. However for my role, they gave a scenario in which you needed to organise the solutions and investigative processes for the specific scenario. I actually had the best interview experience yet with Hampshire police for this role. The two interviewers were high up in their roles but did not make me feel intimidated of them. Very open and although fast in terms of the questions and the interview overall, they gave me the choice to expand on answers and ask them questions too.
