Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedWorked through and agency then was offered full time job, varied work and experience. Good work ethos and Friendly colleagues . Quite a lot of older people working there who seem to know what they are doing but don’t want to help new people.

Slow and no chance of progression
Operations Administrator (Current Employee) - Norwich - 28 November 2022
Most days are slow and boring. As for progression within roles it is hard to progress anywhere. The pay is bad and are unable to hire anyone new. Too many staff are undertrained and promotion is near impossible unless someone leaves, retires or dies and then they will still overlook current staff and hire outside or just leave the position vacant.
Pros
Flexitime
Cons
Slow, zero career progression

Great people but can be stresstful
Inspector (Current Employee) - Cardiff, Cardiff - 10 October 2022
Friendly supportive staff. Work varied and interesting but workload can be stressful particularly when dealing with investigations. Salary reasonable but better available in private sector. Excellent pension.

Attritional
Anonymous (Former Employee) - Anonymous - 19 August 2022
Staff are only valued, developed, heard in certain parts of the business, if you are an inspector or in a relationship with an inspector, or working with inspectors you can expect to be treated (developed, promoted, engaged with) entirely more positively. This organisation values new members from outside the organisation far more than it does its dedicated existing staff (well they make for better engagement parameters and more positive responses in the peoples survey). It's all about box ticking. Engagement and consultation is largely fake. An organisation that unswervingly follows (moreover cites) the HR rules until it suits them to bend them (for a friend or to satisfy a quota of some description). HSW in HSE is 'textbook' (not in a good way) rather than usefully tailored and driven by the personal ambition/profile building of those in that department rather than an appreciation of the actual need of the workforce.
Pros
Flexible working, supportive colleagues, it might look good on a CV
Cons
Poor progression (unless you're connected), unbearably hierarchical, mock engagement policy (designed to make you go away)

Poor management
Band 4 Inspector (Current Employee) - Liverpool - 28 July 2020
Poor management throughout HSE. Lack of support when new to the role. Close ranks when issues reported. The job itself is difficult but interesting. Made some good colleagues
Pros
Decent wage. Exciting job.
Cons
Lack of management support

poor ineffective management
Technical Support Engineer (Current Employee) - Buxton - 14 July 2020
there is no progression/promotion from one band to the next, to progress one has to apply to any suitable vacancies that are published. Your previous performance is not used as a measure during the recruitment process.... Also there is no incremental pay rises within the various bands... performance us not rewarded.
Pros
relaxed no pressure work/life balance
Cons
poor pay, no promotion options

Productive, challenging, interesting and rewarding work
Specialist Occupational Health Inspector (Current Employee) - Based in Birmingham England but I'm required to go to all parts of Britain. - 17 April 2020
There is no typical day at work in my role as a Specialist Occupational Health Inspector. It is both varied and diverse and includes attending Court to provide Expert Opinion on criminal cases involving occupational ill health.
I am often called on to provide specialist support to my general Inspector colleagues on occupational ill-health issues across a wide range of industries. There is a culture of mutual support between colleagues and a willingness to share information when called upon to do so. My role is very rewarding and diverse, with no two days the same. For instance, I am also responsible for my own investigations, one of which led to a successful prosecution against a company that failed to control exposure to vibrating equipment, thereby exposing its employees to ill health. This has been the most challenging part of my role to date.
As a nurse, it is also very rewarding to work with employers and their employees in order to mitigate the risk of developing an occupational related disease by ensuring that the right control measures are in place. The nature of my role also requires me to complete the Regulatory Training Programme. This programme is underwritten by NEBOSH and required me to successfully complete the course. It included a year long theory and practical training and I am very proud of the fact that I achieved an excellent grade in the Legal Examination component of the course.

Target and Intelligence Officer (Former Employee) - Basingstoke, Hampshire - 29 January 2020
Lovely place to work, nice colleagues, flexible hours, relaxed atmosphere, pension and sick pay. Interesting work.. They really do look after you and have your best interests at heart. Lots of in house training courses. I worked there as an Administrator for fifteen years. I left 2015. Regret it to this day.

Changing culture
Graphic officer (Former Employee) - Liverpool - 30 April 2018
Once proud and caring employer, now subject to market forces. Working conditions deteriorating, and moral decreasing largely due to top heavy management structure, leading to lack of professional response to core function.
Pros
colleagues
Cons
management
