Tiring without thanks

Indeed featured review

I love working for HMPPS. It is however, hard work physically and mentally demanding. The pay is dreadful, but the pension is good if you can stick it out for that long.

Pros

Free uniforms.

Cons

Stress without support, long hours, terrible pay.

Horrendous environment to work in due to the staff not the convicts

Worst job ever. When you try to highlight the problems within the establishment you get pushed out of the door. The security department are the most corrupt.

Pros

None

So much to do and varied but could be better.

The job is varied and opportunities to learn and advance are available if you want to do so.The hours are unsociable but if need arises there is opportunity to balance work with your needs, family comes 1st, if you manage your leave properly and rest days you can end up being off work a lot. The pension is good compared to most work places and thats a bonus but the general pay definitely needs to increase, though you can make it up with generous overtime payments. It's not for everypne, behind the walls is a different world and a very challenging environment, thats not to say its all bad. If you persevere and work hard you can make a career. The and it's quite a secure line of work, there are opportunities to move within the civil service too.

Pros

Overtime pay Humour Extra training Pride from changing a life Pension Civil service

Cons

Unsociable hours Overduea a big payrise

First 20yrs was superb. Good management, supportive staff

Final 10yrs…..short of staff, budget reduced continuously, poor recruiting, poor new staff, unacceptable new terms and conditions forced upon staff, very experienced staff allowed to take VEDS leaving many poor and unexperienced staff, poor management with poor skills and unable to make important decisions. I could go on……..

Pros

Not many

Cons

To many to mention !!

Poor management and very high sickness levels, due to stress.

The most stressful part of working in the Probation Service, is the poor management, of whom are never held accountable to their superiors. A huge caseload and not enough hours in the day to be able to do your job efficiently is a constant daily worry! If you really want a career that you feel makes a positive difference in peoples lives, don't be deluded by thinking you will do this by working in the Probation Service.

Pros

Work colleagues are great!

Cons

Were do I start!

Corrupt management

Management brush a lot under the carpet, no support and no encouragement to progress. Get stopped from progressing as my face doesn’t fit. Management are bullies

Pros

None

Cons

Long hours, under paid work for over promoted incompetent management

Hard place to work

Extensive bullying culture amongst OSG grade. Management fully aware of this but not truly committed to changing it. Orderly officers regularly discuss the prison officers personal/ private lives in broad earshot of anyone who happens to be listening. Staff in control room regularly fast asleep or reclining so far back in their chairs that they answer radio calls by pressing the “talk” button with the soles of their boots. Offenders were consistently more polite and respectful than the staff. It could be a great place to work if the poisonous culture was systematically eradicated once and for all.

Pros

Local. Varied tole

Cons

Bullying. Filthy environment

Youth Justice Worker - not

Thinking of making a difference? Don’t bother. Not as job advertised - basically a turnkey!!! There’s is no 1on 1 intervention with the boys at all so helping them rehabilitate is impossible

Avoid!

I work as a specialist Instructor in a workshop at an establishment. The number 1 priority is the prisoners! Staff safety comes second in my eyes which is very unfortunate considering the nature of the job. Where the workshops are concerned the governors are only bothered about getting as many prisoners into the workshops regardless of their suitability for the type of workshop they are put in. We deal with prisoners with serious mental health problems who should not even be in a workshop with tools and machines. Their is no assessment or criteria that the prisoners have to meet that governs this! The amount of work we have for the prisoners to do is little, yet governors and managers still insist on putting more prisoners into workshops. This ultimately creates its own big problem with prisoners sitting around in the workshop and doing little or nothing, it then leads to them messing about and causing problems or breaking things where the instructors basically turn into babysitters, policing bad behaviour whilst trying to continue with production to meet the targets set. There is little in the way of meaningful activity for the prisoners to do which is unfair on them as some actually want to work and learn, not many, but some do. The workshop where I work is seriously understaffed and management cannot get suitably qualified people through the door. This is probably down to the lower pay compared to private sector workers and no possibility of regular overtime. The plus side is what drew myself to the job and that is working 5 days a week, Mon-Fri, no early starts or late finishes, -

Pros

37.5, hr week Mon-Fri

Cons

Understaffed, too many prisoners and not enough work, an accident waiting to happen. Senior management do not listen.

Admin overlooked

If you are applying for an admin/supply role expect to be undervalued and overlooked. Management do not care about you and you do not get paid enough even if they tell you, you are.

Not easy and not well paid

Not a good work life balance. Initial salary way too low. Issues with recruitment and staff retention. Constantly understaffed. Great colleagues who look after each other every day is different. If you are squeamish then this is not the job for you

Pros

None

Cons

Dangerous environment

Underpaid and terrible conditions

Poor work conditions, terrible pay for what the job is. Treated poorly by management. Hectic and stressful environment. Definitely not for everyone and unfortunately you will not know if you have what it takes until you start working.

Pros

Overtime, progression

Cons

Conditions, managment, pay

The prisoners are treated better than the staff

ignored by the managers, surrounded by two faced fake people, very negative work environment, The prisoners get lots of thanks from the managers but the staff get nothing. Crazy shift pattern with not enough down time in the working week, if you are attacked it just gets thrown out and your made to feel in the wrong.

Pros

good annual leave..when it wasn't denied

Cons

poor management

Avoid

Bad atmosphere and dangerous environment. Management care for prisoners over staff so expect investigations a lot. Poor pay for what you have to do. Look elsewhere
Was this review helpful?

Would not recommend

Treated appallingly by senior members of staff.. Problems never resolved. Constantly recruiting because officers are Constantly leaving. If you want your sanity and you want to be treated like a human being with respect then don't work for the prison service. Pay is poor.

Pros

Friendly team

Cons

Long hours
