We're Hermes, The Parcel People
We’re the UK’s consumer delivery specialist, providing flexible and affordable delivery options to home, work, ParcelShops and Lockers, delivering more than 400 million parcels a year with a mission to be the UK’s carrier of choice. The Hermes journey began in 1974 as Grattan Mail Order in Bradford. We’ve grown over the years, with an increasing number of hubs and depots across the country, a constantly expanding number of ParcelShops and a growing friendly, local courier network. In 2009, we launched our customer to customer business offering a cheaper, easier, faster way to send parcels. Since the launch, we’ve added lots of extra services, including international delivery, print in-store devices in our ParcelShops, safe place photos and renewable energy fuelled vehicles. We’re now the largest parcel delivery business in the UK offering 7-day delivery solutions for anyone who wants to send a parcel. We work alongside 80% of the UK’s top retailers including Next, ASOS and John Lewis.
There’s never been a better, more exciting time to join the UK’s fastest growing consumer parcel delivery company. We’re well on our way to achieving our aim to be the nation’s carrier of choice, and we’re looking for fresh talent to help us fully realise our vision. It’s a fun and fast-paced place to be. It’s challenging, too – but in a good way because we’re committed to empowering our people to be the best across all areas of the business.
Our 4 core values are a really important part of our business. It’s in our DNA and informs what we do and how we do it, every day. DO the right thing. If it feels right then it probably is. We value honesty, respect and integrity. DARE to be different. Be brave, be daring. Above all, be something our competitors aren’t expecting. STRIVE for more – always go the extra mile. BE customer-obsessed. They’re the lifeblood of our business, so give them a service and experience that’s second to none.
Learning and development
If you share our values, you’re in the right place. We invest heavily in our people to align their personal development and career progression with our overall business growth. We care about our parcel people and we’ve put in place a number of training and talent development programmes, internal coaching opportunities, and first-rate apprenticeship and graduate schemes to seek out fresh talent. Whether you want to upskill, gain a qualification or just make a difference, you can do it with us.
Hub and depot operations
Hubs and depots Our hub and depot network is crucial to keeping Hermes running. And our hard-working, talented people have been key in keeping the nation running this challenging year. As our operations grow, we want to hear from people interested in engineering, logistics and warehouse work. There are roles at all levels, from apprenticeships to management. It can be physical, demanding work. But it’s rewarding too, with lots of variety, a supportive workplace and top opportunities for career development. Drivers From ParcelShop vans to LGV Cat C/C&E lorries, there are lots of driving roles available. We handle 400million parcels a year so we’re interested in people who want to help us increase the first-time delivery success rate and move parcels around the UK on time, all the time. We’re keen to develop a pipeline of talented drivers at Cat C and Cat C&E levels, and our Road to Logistics scheme, open to existing staff and external applicants with no LGV experience, is helping us achieve that. Management Keeping our customers happy is a priority at Hermes, which means getting every single parcel to the right place at the right time is critical. Our ops teams go the extra mile to make it happen. With an extensive range of roles available in our hubs and depots, there are great opportunities for career progression. Hermes is a proud investor in people and we empower people to achieve the very best for themselves and for the company. We offer many training and talent schemes across the business.
Self-employed couriers Our couriers are crucial to the business. With more people than ever shopping online due to Covid-19, our couriers have tirelessly helped keep the nation on track. We’re always looking for friendly self-employed couriers to deliver parcels in their local area. While you’re your own boss, meaning you can work around your own schedule, you’ll also have the support and guidance of an experienced field manager. There are competitive rates of pay and you’ll get access to our extensive rewards scheme. Community and regional delivery managers We are also looking for field managers to oversee our rapidly expanding network of couriers. If you’re a natural problem solver, committed to customer service and an excellent communicator, this might be for you. It’s fast-paced and challenging work, but also rewarding and exciting as no two days are ever the same. There are lots of opportunities for career progression and we plan to offer all regional delivery managers the chance to join the operations management level 5 apprenticeship.
Opportunities Hermes is a digital business, so outstanding tech underpins all that we do. As we grow, there’s never been a more exciting time to join our award-winning IT teams based in our state-of-the-art Leeds city centre Tech Hub. We believe tech can transform the parcel industry and optimise customer experience. And if you’re on the same page we have a variety of roles available, from developers, testers and programmers to analysts, UX gurus and project managers. Innovation We invest heavily in tech and the results can be seen in the innovative products and services we offer. There are many things you might be working on. There’s our ever-evolving mobile app, for example, which is continuously being updated with new features. We’re also using augmented reality to personalise parcels and developing in-car delivery systems. We research and develop in-house, allowing us to build apps to test new business models and quickly react to the market as the industry changes. Culture We encourage diversity and our tech teams have a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. We actively promote agile working and are proud to showcase women in tech. We’re bold, progressive and fun, too – visitors to our bespoke Tech Hub, which is home to our Innovation Lab, will spot a vintage Pac-Man arcade machine and a giant Alexa device. And even though we’ve been working from home, we still hold virtual Friday socials. If you join us, you’ll work, learn and play with the best.
The Parcel People Hermes is currently enjoying a successful period of continued year-on-year growth. And as we get bigger, our range of jobs increases – especially in head office, which is split across two sites in Leeds. Here you’ll find a wide variety of roles – so if you’re a people person, you could work in talent acquisition or employee relations in HR. Or maybe numbers are your thing, in which case our finance department is for you. Or there’s marketing, sales, customer services… you get the picture. Location and benefits We’re well placed in Leeds and easily commutable from the likes of Manchester, Sheffield, York and Bradford. Our main site on the outskirts of the city, in Morley, has easy access from the M62, while our riverside Tech Hub is moments away from Leeds train station – which is just over 2 hours from London. Once you’re here, we offer flexible working, 26 days holiday, bonus schemes and a flexible benefits scheme offering personalised discounts galore. Culture and values A business is nothing without people and at Hermes we invest heavily in our people – to nurture, develop and empower them. We provide the perfect environment in which talent can thrive: it’s a progressive, creative, fast-paced, agile and fun place to work. We combine the many benefits of being a major business – one of the biggest in our field – with the best bits of start-up culture. As well as flexible working, we encourage ownership of work and place great value in teamwork and collaboration.
