Unfortunately once you gain a role in a school you are stuck there. No internal transfers and no jobs available due to surplus of teachers nationally.

Interesting but bound by constraints

Varied tasks with varied children require the candidate to think on their feet to be able to support a variety of abilities and disabilities, while following a strict timetable

Work Place and management

I worked for the Highland Council for over 10 years. And in all that time there was only one line manager who was any good and new the job. They retired him off because he was good at his job. From then on there were a succession of managers who were just yes me and had no idea about our needs in the field.it is unfortunate that this is how the council is run the moral in the staff is very poor at times and i am glad i left.It was starting to affect my mental well-being and i hard to have counselling because of the stress i was placed under. They are not a good organisation to work for unless you have the right person as a line manager. When you have a problem they stick there heads in the sand.

Pros

Can not think of any

Cons

Cant not think of any

Pay can and should be better.

This job can be demanding at time's double runs for poor pay and no thanks for it. Just your expected to do it no matter if you have kids coming home from school or what ever. You get treated unfair at time's when you don't fall in line with management demands. But job is very secure. That i do like. Holiday's are great once you been there 5 year's. Double time day in lue for working Holiday's. Time and a half for working overtime. Definitely a younger person's job.

I was left to home work with no experience and no help to settle into the area. I have two small children. I asked for help to find child care.

I ended up having to leave this post due to lack of support, lack of child care. Very little training and being told I was not settling after a year of asking for help over and over.

Pros

Home working

Cons

No support, no back up, long hours

Relaxed and friendly

Made me feel at ease. Friendly approach. Still work to deadlines but relaxed. I never felt out of place and most were very welcoming. Unfortunately my personal circumstances conspire against me staying and I had to leave

Productive fun place to work

Amazing place to work. Management are extremely understanding and helpful, they train you to do your job properly and efficiently. All staff I have came across were friendly and chatty! No day was ever boring or tiring.Had absolutely no issues, everyone was always eager to help out or listen. Cant fault at all, my only regret is leaving.

Pros

People, Training, Pay

Cons

Pros

The jobs are fairly well organized

Cons

Working with children is always rewarding

Primary teaching has it's own stresses and rewards, it is full on in terms of energy and commitment needed but incredibly rewarding when you see children flourish.

Pros

rewarding and satisfying

Poor unfair manager - Alness housing especially

Would not recommend anyone to work in this environment. Bullying by senior management is disgusting. And if questioned or comlaint raised then look out because your job will be at risk. Alness housing management all protect each other amd its the workers who suffer. Manipulation and corrupt. Micro managment at its finest. Would never recommend my worst enemy to work herehere

Fantastic place to work

Work in school kitchen. Head cook is a dream, friendly kind thoughtful really appreciates her staff. Work school days only which is fantastic. Brilliant training regularly uniform provided. Not shoes . Fair rota and brilliant support from the bigger bosses. I had a terrible experience with a cook in charge previously and can’t believe the difference working here with a competent genuinely nice cook

Loved the job

I absolutely loved the job however for what I was doing I was not getting paid enough. I still feel the same about it now. Highland Council employees should be getting a higher rate of pay if they are dealing with children as it can be very stressful.

Varied placements add to interest

Relief support work is an interesting role but anyone who can't cope with being flexible and adaptable should not apply. By its very nature work with children who have additional needs is extremely challenging and takes a lot of mental stamina as well as physical stamina. Further difficulties occur when the child can not or will not conform to the framework of curriculum of excellence. A bit like dressing a snake really! The efforts of Pupil Support Assistant are not rewarded in the pay packet.

Highland Council

I thoroughly enjoyed working in this environment. Friendly staff and always plenty of work to be done throughout the day. I started this job initially to get the school holidays as my children were young at the time. I would certainly recommend this type of position to anyone with small children.

Pros

Weekends off

Cons

Working alone

Productive and fun place to work

Helped me gain a lot more confidence, the women in the office were really helpful, kind and funny. I actually rather enjoyed looking through the papers and scanning articles for the ladies in the office

The graveyard of broken dreams

Don't go there if you're an ambitious person or like to get things done. The place will just frustrate you, it's not worth it. The pay is decent, but no professional progression unless you want to be a manager. You're basically expected to do the same thing for years and years on end. And don't even try to change, improve anything or they will bite off your head. Management is poor and the higher up, the worse it gets. Lack of leadership or vision in every single area. In general, just a depressing place to work.

Pros

flexi work

Cons

everything else
