HM Prison & Probation Service
HM Prison & Probation Service Employee Review
It’s alright
Prison Officer (Current Employee) - Peterborough, Cambridgeshire - 23 September 2023
More con’s than pro’s. It can be a rewarding job but it depends on management. Very short staffed and they don’t really care about your mental health and well-being, they care more about the money they can get from having prisoners in rather than keeping it a safe place to work.

Prison Officer (Current Employee) - Winchester, Hampshire - 30 November 2023
Being a prison officer is hard work lots of mental stress and anxiety for your safety, the biggest challenge is your work colleagues who will treat you like trash when you new however if you have a good time you will thrive

They will sell you a dream that will become a nightmare once you actually start the job. Training is fun but totally insufficient to the actual role and they will say you will do on the job learning which might entail learning from someone on the course a month ahead of you. Shadowing a shadow basically. The place is an absolute shambles, run by amateur Mickey mouse staff. Absolute chaos in there on some wings, if you look reasonably fit and tough they will allocate you a neglected, dump of a wing. No help and support from mentors or management just expected to know things from your inadequate training. You can be expected to work 9 shifts in a row too which isn't overtime. The place is ridiculously understaffed, which is telling in itself but makes it more dangerous. Heard this place is a bit unique for how bad it is. If you're interested I'd suggest applying for another Prison.

hmmm
Probation Officer (Current Employee) - Peterborough, Cambridgeshire - 14 April 2023
Colleagues are lovely but you have to find your own way without much support from senior officers. Shadowing or starting out is not arranged for you and whilst training you're pretty much left to your own devices with no direction. Training is not thorough enough and more of a tick box theory exercise method rather than practical learning. No sense of belonging but definitely a thick skin needed due to a minor amount of staff who judge and like to add on pressure with a 'sink or swim' mentality - but overall a really lovely group of people and the job is rewarding a lot of the time. If I had let some of my colleagues comments get to me whilst new I'd have walked away before my training was even finished.
